FAM to let affiliates, fans to decide for Malaysia U23 team for SEA Games and AFC Qualifiers

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) will let the affiliates and the fans to decide on the selection of the Malaysia U23 team for the upcoming South-East Asia (SEA) Games and the AFC U23 qualifiers.

According to the secretary-general of the FAM, Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin, a meeting will be held next week to decide whether the teams would release their players to play for those tournaments or not.

In a statement released by the FAM, Hamidin said: “Due to the fact that these fixtures are not listed on FIFA’s Calendar, the teams are not obligated to release their players.”

“However, if all teams choose not to release the selected called-up players, do not start finger pointing when the U23 national team fails to achieve positive result.”

“If we want a positive result, then every team should released the selected players in order to give the U23 national team the best chance to perform. Hence, the ball is in your court.”

Hamidin also stated that the decision to ask from the affiliates and teams was approved by the president, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.

Malaysia U23 set to face regional rivals Thailand, Indonesia and also Mongolia in July for 2018 AFC U23 qualifiers while SEA Games will take place this August with Malaysia as the host for the tournament.
