The hosts dazzled viewers across the continent with a stunning light show, using a model of the Pyramid on the field. Football fans described the ceremony as world class and better than Fifa World Cup opening ceremonies.
When the highly -anticipated game between Egypt and Zimbabwe got underway, the Pharaohs found it difficult to get past visiting keeper Edmore Sibanda, with Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah was busy down the right of Egypt's wing.
The Warriors' best chance of the game was fashioned when Kaizer Chiefs forward Khama Billiat was played through but failed to lob the ball over Egypt keeper Mohamed El Shenawy.
Eventually the deadlock was broken in the 41st minute with Mahmoud "Trezeguet" Hassan taking advantage of some sloppy Zimbabwean defending. Hassan weaved through with a brilliant solo move and then easily hit it past Sibanda's left.
Most of the reaction on Twitter was focused on how beautiful Hassan's goal was. You'd find Liverpool and Arsenal fans wanting to sign him up, and a Egypt supporter wanting to marry him.
At the end of the match Zimbwean fans were proud and neutrals were not so amazed by Egypt's performance.

Sumptuous finish, an absolute joy!
After 45 minutes of detailed analysis, I’ve concluded that Mahmoud Hassan (Trézeguét) would be a great signing as backup for Mané:— Josh (@KloppStyle) June 21, 2019
• He’s 24
• Can provide Lovren with competition as Salah’s best mate
• Great on either foot
• Has a TOTS on Ultimate Team
• He’d be cheap
popular opinion: Trezeguet is better than Salah.— عمرو ماجد (@iamrgamed) June 21, 2019
With our £45 M budget, Trezeguet of Egypt could be a good buy for Unai Emery and @Arsenal given that he already plays in Europe and is quite a decent winger that the coach badly wants. #TotalAFCON2019— Petyr Okurut🇺🇬 (@okurutsimp94) June 21, 2019

Zimbabwe a bit disorganised defensively but some nice link up play and movement off the ball
Egypt completely dependent on individual exploits of their wingers
Thumbs up to 🇿🇼 left back, great defensive performance against Salah. pic.twitter.com/Dp5rfPQUOv
Playing the last 2mins of added time, still Egypt 1-0 Zimbabwe.— Copper (@CopperLebarante) June 21, 2019
The only reason why Zimbabwe will lose the opening game to Egypt is they didn't utilise talent and knowledge at the same time. Poor team selection. pic.twitter.com/VVoLbCF6vY— Trevor Oakley (@TrevorOakley1) June 21, 2019
Egypt is pap. No longer a powerful team. I don't see them going far in this tournament. Zimbabwe was just unfortunate to give away such a soft goal. Hopefully they will redeem themselves in the next game. #Afcon2019— LesetjaMO (@MoLesetja) June 21, 2019
