Copa Coca-Cola will take Nigeria to the next level, says West

The legendary defender was present at the opening of the school competition in Ibadan and he sees it producing the next generation of Nigerian stars.

Former Nigeria international Taribo West was the guest celebrity at the Ibadan regionals of the 2017 edition of the Copa Coca-Cola.

The event which sees five teams from five states (Ekiti, Lagos, Ondo, Ogun and Kwara) compete for a spot in the national finals billed for Lagos, witnessed the presence of West and another ex-Super Eagle in Issa Sofoluwe.

West conducted a coaching clinic for the young lads, taking them through drills and other skills he learnt during an illustrious career that saw him play for some of Europe’s biggest teams.

The former Inter Milan defender praised the organisers, Coca-Cola for giving youths this opportunity.

“Coca-Cola has given a platform for the youths and it’s really amazing because it gives opportunity to the up and coming generation that will take Nigeria to the next level.” West told Goal.

Speaking on Nigeria’s upcoming 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa in Uyo, West asserts that the men in green are ready for it.

“The boys are ready to play because there is a new spirit of winning within them and they are ready to make the revelation of the time and season. South Africa are working hard in building a new team but I think this Nigeria team has an edge over them.”

With the defence playing a key role in this game, having seen Nigeria draw 2-2 in the last match with their opponent in 2015, West is optimistic that they won’t falter this time.

“They will learn from their past and flaws. The defence has been solid in their last games and I believe if they can work hard and add discipline that they’ve started with, I don’t think there’ll be anything to fear about. They will do well and display better against South Africa.”
