With Tim Cahill set for his Socceroos swansong, a fit and firing Jamie Maclaren appears just the man to fill his void in front of goal.

Back in Scotland on loan with Hibernian, the 25-year-old is playing regularly and has already found the back of the net this season.

Initially cut from the Socceroos World Cup squad before being recalled under Bert van Marwijk, Maclaren is grateful to earn a call-up to Graham Arnold's first training camp in charge and is desperate to stake his claim.

"It's obviously good to be involved in any camp," Maclaren said.

"You never take those things for granted. Obviously with Graham coming in, you want to impress. First impression is always key.

"For myself, having already scored this season, I carry some confidence into this camp to show Arnie what I can do. I'm just looking forward to this week."

With just six Socceroos appearances to his name and no goals as yet, the time is now for Maclaren to force his way into an Australian side short of goals.

As the only nation not to score from open play at the World Cup, the Socceroos must find a new source of goals in the absence of Cahill and Maclaren is now in a good position to prove his worth.

While Tomi Juric struggles for form and fitness, Maclaren looks sharp and ready to make the number nine position his own ahead of friendlies in November.

Though a lot has been said about Cahill's departure from the national team, Australia's all-time leading scorer believes there are players capable of filling his void and revealed he's been actively trying to ensure they are ready.

"I have been grooming them for goals with their clubs...when you do it for your club, you do it for your country," Cahill said.

"Now it's about doing it on the international stage when it counts. It doesn't matter if it's against a team from the Middle East or Asia or internationally or the Asian Cup.

"They all count the same and the effort that you put in for your club has to be the same as you put in for your country."
