Chelsea legend Terry 'clearly cut out to be a manager', says Nevin

John Terry is leaving Chelsea to carry on playing, but Pat Nevin says the Blues legend is “clearly cut out to be a manager”.

An announcement by the Blues has confirmed that their long-serving captain will bring his 22-year association with the club to a close at the end of his current contract.

Terry has expressed a desire to find a new challenge before hanging up his boots, but he is also being backed to forge a successful coaching career when that day does come.

Chelsea legend Nevin told Radio Five Live: “In all my years watching, playing, commentating on football, I have never met another individual who is so clearly cut out to be a manager.

“No one is a certainty to be a success in that job, but he’s as close as you can get, in my eyes, as an absolute stick-on.

“He’s got absolutely everything you need. Right down to that ‘aura’ that people talk about. Very few have it. He’s spectacular.

“It’s amazing because another one of the things that we’ve talked about in the past: his demeanour, his attitude, his personality with those around the club is diametrically opposite to the way he’s seen outside it.

“If you don’t know him, don’t make a guess of what he’s going to be like — you’ll get it wrong.”

Terry has been working on his coaching badges for a number of years, with Chelsea allowing him to spend time in their academy system.

He clearly has vast knowledge to pass on, as a man with over 700 club appearances to his name and 78 caps for England.

The 36-year-old has also previously expressed a desire to manage Chelsea at some point in the future, possibly with former team-mate Frank Lampard alongside him.

He told Radio Five Live in February: "That would be the dream for us two. Who knows?

“If we get to come back in 10 or 15 years and be at the peak of our careers as managers and do a great job, that would be unbelievable.”
