CHAN 2018 Group D Wrap: Cameroon go home as Congo go through

Cameroon v Angola
The Indomitable Lions will not play in the knock out stage after losing their second straight game of the tournament

On a day of joy for Congo, Cameroon became confirmed for an early exit from the ongoing African Nations Championship after a defeat in Saturday’s Group D action.

The Indomitable Lions – led by the legendary Rigobert Song – failed to turn their fortunes around, following the opening day 1-0 fall to Congo, as they succumbed to a 1-0 reversal to a plucky Angolan side on matchday two.

Captain Ricardo Job’s a penalty on the half hour mark was the separating factor at Stade Andrar, Agadir.

The Lions, thus, sit bottom of the group without a point ahead of their last game against Burkina Faso.

And it becomes only the first time the side exit the competition after the first round, having reached the last eight in both 2012 and 2016.

Angola, on the other hand, have taken their tally to four points, putting them in pole position to reach the next stage.

In the other fixture, Congo etched their name on the quarter-final roster following a 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso.

Carof Bakoua opened the scoring in the 67th minute, before Kader Bidimbou put the game beyond reach in stoppage time.

The Red Devils’ progression to the next stage is very much aided by their opening day upset of Cameroon.

Burkina Faso, meanwhile, still have a chance to make the next round, but that dream can only be realised if the Stallions record a good win over Cameroon on the last day (Wednesday) and the Palancas Negras succumb to Congo.
