Mohun Bagan staged a comeback against NBP Rainbow AC to beat them 3-2 in their second match of the Calcutta Football League (CFL) Premier Division ‘A’ on Tuesday at the Mohun Bagan ground.
The visitors were leading by a goal at halftime thanks to a world-class free-kick from Abhijit Sarkar. Bagan came back strongly in the second half as Aser Dipanda, Abhishek Ambekar and Azharuddin Mallick scored a goal each. Joel Sunday pulled one back in the 83rd minute but it wasn’t enough to prevent Bagan from getting all three points.
Coach Sankarlal Chakraborty made three changes in the starting XI today and the most significant one was omitting last match’s goalscorer Henry Kisekka with Aser Dipanda.
Sankarlal explained his decision, “Henry (Kisekka) has been suffering from fever since last night. We understood that he won't be able to play today. The doctor has advised complete bed rest for two days.”
Sankarlal acknowledged new recruit Mehtab Hossain's contribution in the second half and suggested how his arrival changed the colour of the game. He said, “Mehtab (Hossain) is an experienced player who has been a regular in ‘Kolkata Maidan’ and hence knows how to play in this kind of a surface. Tirthankar (Sarkar) played a vital part coming off the bench in the previous match and today (it was) Mehtab. They are important players and they turn up when the team need them the most.”
Mohun Bagan was often seen switching from 4-4-2 to 3-5-2 during the match. Gurjinder Singh, Kimkima and Eze Kingsley formed the back three with Arijit Bagui and Abhishek Ambekar on either flank.
About the tactical changes, Sankarlal said, “Today we played a back three in defence. It is not that we have not practised with three men at the back. But this was the first competitive match, so some mistakes happened. We will rectify in the next match.”
