Caf Champions League Group D failed to produce a winner with similar 1-1 draws in matches played in Ndola and Luanda

A late equaliser by substitute Simangaliso Shongwe helped debutants Mbabane Swallows snatch a point at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium against their much-fancied opponents Zesco United.

Shongwe rose from the bench to connect into goal a Tony Tsabedze cross 10 minutes from time and cancel out Kenyan defender David Owino’s 65th minute opener for the hosts.

Zesco dominated play in the first half and threatened to go on a rampage but Lazarus Kambole, Winston Kalengo and John Chin’gandu were guilty of fluffing good scoring chances.

Following a goalless opening half, Zesco went ahead when Owino headed in Chin’gandu’s corner kick but failed to capitalise on their lead and control the game.

They allowed the visitors to claw back and hold on to leave Ndola with a point.

Zambia appears to be a favourable hunting ground for Swallows who in March beat Zesco’s compatriots Zanaco 2-1 in Lusaka to book a debut appearance in the group phase of the Champions League.

Swallows will now welcome Primero Agosto in their next Group D match on May 15.

In another Group D match in Luanda, hosts Primero Agosto blew away a first half lead to allow visiting Etoile du Sahel deny them maximum points at the Estadio de 11 Novembro.

DR Congo striker Mongo Lumpala Bokamba thrust Agosto ahead two minutes before the break but Ammr Jemal struck back for Etoile on 66 minutes.

Jemal was always a big threat for the hosts from the first whistle but Agosto also had their near-moments with Jose Macaia having his effort repelled by Etoile goalkeeper Achraf Krir 20 minutes into the contest.

Krir was called in to action again eight minutes later when he denied Fofo’s strike.

Bokamba then beat the halftime whistle to break the deadlock from a counter attack.

Etoile tried to come back after the breather with Jemal, Mohamed Msakni and Guinea forward Alkhali Bangoura coming close.

The match was closed as a contest after Jemal hit back for Etoile and from then, no serious raids were witnessed as both teams seemed content with a draw.
