The Kumasi-based side failed to capitalise on the defeat of the Zone A leaders on matchday 11

Asante Kotoko fell 1-0 to regional rivals Ashantigold on matchday 11 of the Ghana Special Competition in Obuasi on Sunday, with Mark Agyekum scoring the lone goal.

The Miners made five changes to their side, with Richard Osei Agyemang and Shafiu Mumuni replacing Samed Ibrahim and Richard Djodi respectively, while Stephen Sowu, Abdul Latif Anabila, and Appiah McCarthy were also handed starts.

Kotoko coach CK Akonnor made two changes to his squad which were held to a 1-1 draw by Bechem United on Wednesday, with Prince Acquah and Abass Mohammed coming in for Emmanuel Agyemang Badu and Naby Keita respectively.

Both teams showed their intentions for a win at the blast of the whistle, as Kotoko needed to return to winning ways while Ashgold wanted to take their revenge following a loss in the reverse fixture.

It was a back and forth tussle across much of the first half until the 44th minute when Mark Agyekum pounced on a defensive blunder to open the scoring.

The visitors’ defence failed to clear a long cross, which fell onto the path of Agyekum, who made no mistake in bending the effort beyond Kotoko goalkeeper Felix Annan.

Kotoko showed better form in the second half and pushed hard for the equaliser, but their best chance of the day was bungled by Mohammed, whose close-range finish failed to find the target.

The home side had a couple of opportunities to improve their lead but could not get another goal at Len Clay stadium.
