Commentary

Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
Atletico face a huge game in the LaLiga title race next week when they host rivals Real Madrid at home on Sunday. Villarreal take on Valencia on the road in their next LaLiga outing on Friday.
Atletico Madrid bounce back to form in LaLiga to secure a 2-0 victory over Villarreal this evening. An own goal from Alfonso Pedraza and a strike from Joao Felix were enough to deliver the three points for Los Rojiblancos. Diego Simeone's men extend their lead at the top of LaLiga to five points ahead of Barcelona. Villarreal are now winless in their last seven league games, which will be a huge concern to Unai Emery.
90' + 2' FULL-TIME: VILLARREAL 0-2 ATLETICO MADRID
90' + 1' Moreno goes for a blast from the edge of the box on his left foot, but Torreira throws himself in the way of the strike.
90' There will be two minutes of added time.
88' Villarreal continue to line up strikes at goal. Bacca takes on an effort from distance that Oblak gets down to his right to save with ease.
87' SAVE! Chukwueze raids down the right flank and threads the needle to find Parejo on the edge of the box. However, the midfielder can only place a tame effort straight into the arms of Oblak. Simeone is not happy with his team on the sideline.
86' WIDE! Costa has a huge opportunity as he latches on to a knockdown from Baena, but he smashes his left-footed strike from the right inside channel wide of the target.
85' SAVE! Baena is denied by a brilliant save by Oblak. Chukwueze twists and turns before seeing his strike blocked, while Moreno is also halted by the Atletico defence. The ball loops towards Baena who meets it with a crunching volley that the Atletico keeper has to turn over the bar.
L. Torreira
Á. Correa
83' Torreira replaces Correa for the closing stages of the game.
82' OFF THE POST! Baena collects an offload from Costa and launches a stinging strike at goal. It soars towards the top-left corner, but clips the post and travels wide of the target.
79' Chukwueze makes a surge forward and offloads into the path of Bacca in the box. The striker tries a neat backheel to tee up his team-mate, but Felipe is alert to the danger and clears for the visitors.
78' CHANCE! Moreno does brilliantly to latch on to a precise ball over the top from Parejo. He fends off a challenge from Hermoso and tees up Bacca six yards out. However, the Colombian can only place his strike wide of the right post. A huge opportunity spurned.
G. Kondogbia
L. Suárez
76' Simeone shores up his midfield as Kondogbia comes on to replace Suarez.
74' Atletico have been solid in the second half and are grinding their way towards an important win this evening.
72' HANDBALL! Chukwueze delivers a cross from the right flank for an unmarked Moreno to attack. However, the forward uses his arm to send his effort towards goal, and it strikes the woodwork anyway. It has not been Moreno's night.
Álex Baena
Manu Trigueros
71' Baena is on for the home side to replace Trigueros.
Jaume Costa
E. Capoue
71' Costa, who has been booked on the sideline, comes on to the field to replace Capoue.
João Félix
Goal
69' GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! JOAO FELIX FIRES HOME!!!! 2-0 ATLETICO!!!! The visitors take command of the game as the Portuguese buries a right-footed effort on the half-volley into the back of the net. Pau Torres is at fault as he heads a low cross from Vrsaljko straight to Joao Felix. The forward chests the ball down to control it before rifling his strike into the bottom-left corner.
67' The game is still there for the home side, but they need to start capitalising on these opportunities.
65' WIDE! Moreno twists and turns in the left inside channel and fires a strike at goal, but he sees his effort travel wide of the left post as Savic gets a vital touch on the ball.
64' SAVE! Parejo floats a ball over the top for Bacca in the left inside channel and it falls nicely for the striker following a deflection off Savic. He lines up a blast on his left foot that Oblak saves with a firm hand. It deflects back on to Hermoso's arm, but the referee deems that it was unintentional and awards only a corner.
62' The home side have made changes after losing impetus since the break. However, they need to find a way to break down the resolute Atletico defence.
P. Estupiñán
Pedraza
60' Pedraza is withdrawn for the home side and is replaced by Estupinan.
C. Bacca
Moi Gómez
60' Bacca comes on to the field to replace Gomez in the final third.
60' Atletico produce a flowing move as Joao Felix works an offload towards Llorente, who then feeds Suarez in the box. The striker tries to complete the move with a backheel towards the Portuguese, but Albiol covers around to make the interception.
59' SAVE! Koke helps the ball into the path of Correa, who lines up a strike from 20 yards. It takes a deflection off Pedraza, forcing Asenjo into a reaction stop low to his left.
56' Atletico are starting to dictate matters on the pitch and are closing down Villarreal's preferred methods of moving up the field. Simeone's men have adjusted since the restart.
54' SAVE! Torres is closed down by Correa in the box and the loose ball falls into the path of Suarez. He hammers a strike towards the near post, only to be denied by a fine save from Asenjo.
52' Koke floats the resulting free-kick into the box, but Felipe moves too early and is caught offside for the visitors.
Albiol
Yellow Card
51' Albiol brings down Suarez as the two jostle for a loose ball and goes into the book.
49' Villarreal are getting their foot on the ball once again to start the second half. The home side are dominating possession, but are not making meaningful penetration.
Saúl
Yellow Card
47' Saul brings down Chukwueze on the right flank and goes into the book.
46' We're back underway in this LaLiga clash.
João Félix
T. Lemar
46' Lemar is withdrawn at the break for Joao Felix by Simeone.
Although Atletico are ahead in the contest, Diego Simeone will still not feel great about his side's performance. Their goal came against the run of play and even though they have been solid at the back, Villarreal have dominated possession. The Argentine will be looking for a better display from his team in the second half in the final third.
Atletico Madrid lead Villarreal 1-0 at the break in their LaLiga clash. An own goal from Alfonso Pedraza is the difference between the two teams as he was powerless to stop the ball deflecting off his body after Stefan Savic was denied by Sergio Asenjo. The goal was initially called offside, but VAR overturned the decision. Gerard Moreno should have levelled for the home side, but he failed to beat Jan Oblak from close range. However, the game is still in the balance at the interval.
45' + 7' HALF-TIME: VILLARREAL 0-1 ATLETICO MADRID
45' + 6' Moreno is brought down on the edge of the box on the right flank by Felipe. However, the visitors clear the resulting cross from Parejo with relative ease.
T. Lemar
Yellow Card
45' + 5' Lemar is booked for catching Capoue with his elbow after the referee consults the screen at the side of the pitch.
45' + 3' The referee is instructed to look at the screen at the side of the pitch for the elbow by Lemar on Capoue, although there does not look to be a great deal of intent.
45' + 2' Lemar catches Capoue with a stray arm and the defender requires treatment before the break.
45' There will be two minutes of added time.
44' Chukwueze find success down the right flank and cuts a low ball into the inside channel for Moreno. Savic reads the danger and clears ahead of the forward.
43' Atletico are still struggling for fluency in their attacking play as Saul misplaces a simple offload for Llorente. It's not hard to see why the visitors have been off colour of late.
40' Chukwueze continues to cause problems for the visitors. He finds space on the right flank and passes to Moreno, but the Spaniard sees his strike from 20 yards charged down by Felipe.
39' Villarreal have been bright in possession, but have lacked a cutting edge in front of goal. It's the difference between the team so far tonight.
37' Hermoso connects with a drive at goal from distance, but he sends his effort harmlessly wide of the target.
36' OFF THE LINE! Moreno has to score from close range, but he fails to connect with sufficient power to beat Oblak. The forward times his run to perfection to meet a free-kick from Parejo. However, it evades his boot and his eventual header is stopped on the line by the Atletico keeper and then Savic on the follow-up to clear the danger.
Felipe
Yellow Card
35' Felipe pulls back Chukwueze on the charge and goes into the book.
32' SAVE! Trigueros makes a good run into the box to connect with a cross from the right flank from Chukwueze, but his header is tame and saved by Oblak.
Jaume Costa
Yellow Card
30' Costa vents his fury at the officials about the goal being awarded on the sideline. The Villarreal substitute is booked before he can even get on the field.
29' Pedraza sends an offload into the path of Trigueros to blast at goal from the edge of the box. Hermoso is out quickly to block the strike before it can threaten Oblak's goal.
27' Atletico had been on the back foot for the majority of the first half, but exploded into life to take the lead. Can the home side respond?
Pedraza
Own Goal
25' GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! ATLETICO TAKE THE LEAD!!!! 1-0!!!! The visitors are in front as Pedraza inadvertently guides the ball into his own net. Lemar angles a cross to the back post after a corner on the right flank. Savic rises to power a header towards the net. Asenjo keeps out the effort, but the ball rebounds off the keeper and onto Pedraza before crossing the goal-line. VAR confirms that Savic was not offside in the build-up.
25' Atletico have the ball in the back of the net, but VAR will check the score after the referee initially disallows the effort.
24' SAVE! Atletico work the ball in the final third as Llorente, Vrsaljko and Koke combine to tee up Saul. He drives a low strike towards the net with power on his left foot that Asenjo has to push past the post.
23' Atletico have shown very little in the final third in the opening 23 minutes of the game. Simeone will want to see more from his team going forward.
21' Villarreal probe down the left flank as Pedraza feeds a pass into the path of Gomez. Savic closes down the forward, but concedes a corner in the process.
20' Lemar works a cross into the path of Suarez in the box, but he controls the ball with his hand and the referee spots the infringement.
18' OVER! Villarreal work a short-corner move from the left flank. Gomez feeds Chukwueze on the edge of the box, but he slices his left-footed strike well over the bar.
17' Pedraza is played into space down the left flank by Trigueros, but his cross is diverted behind by Vrsaljko.
15' SAVE! Villarreal work a neat move in the final third as Moreno tees up Parejo for a strike on the edge of the box, but his effort is saved with ease by Oblak.
13' Trigueros swings a cross into the box from the right flank that Pedraza rises to attack in the left inside channel, only to head his effort wide of the target.
11' Parejo and Gomez try the give-and-go from a short corner, but the latter is caught offside on the byline.
10' Lemar gets back to cover for the visitors after an offload from Pedraza to Chukwueze causes problems in the Atletico box.
8' Vrsaljko swings a cross into the box from the right flank. Asenjo comes off his line in an attempt to claim the delivery, but Albiol heads it away from him. The two Villarreal men exchange looks before Foyth clears.
5' Chukwueze has a run at the Atletico defence, cutting in from the right flank. However, his attempt to find Pedraza results in his cross being headed clear by Vrsaljko.
3' The visitors are attempting to get their foot on the ball in the early stages of the contest to take the game to Villarreal.
1' We're underway in this LaLiga clash.
Villarreal are winless in their last five LaLiga games against Atletico Madrid (D3 L2). Should they fail to win here, this streak will become their worst against Atletico in the history of the competition.
Atletico have made only one change to their side from their 1-0 defeat to Chelsea. Joao Felix drops out of the team to the bench and is replaced in the line-up by Vrsaljko. Correa and Suarez are expected to lead the line for the visitors.
Villarreal have made four changes to their side that beat Salzburg during the week. Asenjo returns to his spot between the posts for Rulli. Foyth gets the nod to start ahead of Costa in the backline. Gomez and Chukwueze come into the side in the final third in place of Estupinan and Paco Alcacer.
ATLETICO MADRID SUBS: Ivo Grbic, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Lucas Torreira, Joao Felix, Renan Lodi, Hector Herrera, Moussa Dembele, Vitolo.
ATLETICO MADRID (3-1-4-2): Jan Oblak; Felipe, Stefan Savic, Mario Hermoso; Koke; Sime Vrsaljko, Marcos Llorente, Thomas Lemar, Saul Niguez; Luis Suarez, Angel Correa.
VILLARREAL SUBS: Ramiro Fuenes Mori, Carlos Bacca, Dani Rabba, Geronimo Rulli, Pervis Estupinan, Jaume Costa, Alex Baena, Fernando Nino, Andre Ratiu.
VILLARREAL (4-3-3): Sergio Asenjo; Juan Foyth, Raul Albiol, Pau Torres, Alfonso Pedraza; Manu Trigueros, Etienne Capoue, Daniel Parejo; Samuel Chukwueze, Gerard Moreno, Moi Gomez.
Atletico have hit a poor run of form of late to halt their charge for the LaLiga crown along with putting their Champions League hopes in peril. Diego Simeone's men were beaten in LaLiga in their last outing at home against Levante. Los Rojiblancos followed that performance with a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea in the Champions League. Atletico need to regain their composure amid the improving results of both Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Villarreal are winless in their last six LaLiga games, putting pressure on the club to find a solution to keep their Champions League hopes alive. Unai Emery serves the final game of his two-match touchline ban this evening, with Imanol Idiakez controlling proceedings from the sideline once again. Villarreal saw off Red Bull Salzburg during the week to advance in the Europa League, but will need to drastically their league form to overcome Atletico tonight.
Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of the LaLiga clash between Villarreal and Atletico Madrid at the Estadio de la Ceramica.
