An exciting and event-filled game saw Chile find themselves on the receiving end of two VAR decisions, and, in the end, they just about had enough to see off Cameroon. They impressed in the first half before dropping off slightly after the break, but Vidal and Vargas were on hand in the final 10 minutes to make sure they left with all three points.
90' + 3' The game finally gets underway once again and Cameroon push forward on one last attacking move. They look incredibly tired, however, and are unable to find a way through the sea of white shirts camped in front of them.
E. Vargas
90' + 1' GOAL! Vargas makes it 2-0, and it's eventually given after consulting VAR once again! Sanchez breaks into the box all alone before taking on Ondoa, but he takes too long in shooting and eventually loses out. Vargas is able to gobble up the ball, however, and then fires it into the back of the net from close range to double Chile's lead. The referee has to check an offside call with VAR, but he eventually gives the goal.
90' The fourth official has indicated that there will be four minutes of added time.
88' The resulting corner is swung towards the near post and this time manages to find Sanchez, but he can't make decent contact with the ball and sends his effort wide of the goal.
87' Vital interception by Mabouka! Isla is left in acres of space over on the right-hand side of the Cameroon box and it's able to fire a low cross over to the far post. It looks set to find Sanchez, but Mabouka sticks out a foot to deny the Arsenal man a shot on goal.
M. Ngamaleu
S. Siani
86' Cameroon have made a late substitution, with Siani making way for Moumi Ngamaleu.
85' It's all Cameroon at the moment as they continue pushing forward in a desperate attempt to find an equaliser, but Chile now have almost every player behind the ball as they try to hold on to their slender lead.
83' Bassogog causes problems for the Chile back line once again before winning his side a corner. The cross into the penalty area is a good one, but Chile are just about able to deal with the danger under plenty of pressure.
A. Sánchez
81' Sanchez has made a big impact since coming off the bench, so it's no surprise it was his cross that found Vidal's head. He did really well to pick out his team-mate but Cameroon will be really disappointed with their defending there.
A. Vidal
81' GOAL! There it is! Chile have finally taken the lead! The ball finds its way back to Sanchez, who sends another cross into the middle of the penalty area. This one is far better and picks out Vidal, who then beats Ondoa with an excellent downward header.
80' Sanchez twists and turns on the left-hand side of the Cameroon penalty area before firing a cross into the middle of the box, but it's really poorly hit and easily cleared by the under-pressure centre-backs.
78' Djoum sends a clever pass out to the right flank, where it finds Bassogog. The winger charges forward and easily beats Beausejour before trying to whip a low cross into the penalty area, but he's unable to do so and Chile just about managing to hold on.
76' Isla charges down the right wing and gets himself into a pocket of space before chipping a cross into the middle of the box. It's sent too near to Ondoa, however, and the goalkeeper is easily able to cut out the danger.
74' Vargas and Sanchez link up really well on the edge of the penalty area as Chile swarm forward once again, but this time it's Ngadeu-Ngadjui who is able to poke the ball behind for a corner that, once again, Cameroon deal with impressively.
72' How did Isla miss that! The corner is eventually fired in by Valencia and finds Isla all alone at the far post, but, somehow, he can't make contact with the ball from a few yards out. He really should have buried that great chance!
F. Silva
C. Aránguiz
71' Aranguiz seems to have picked up a slight injury, and he's forced off to be replaced by Francisco Silva.
70' Chance for Vargas! A tame cross from Valencia somehow manges to roll over to Vargas. He's eventually able to get a shot away from the edge of the box, but it deflects off Teikeu's outstretched foot and behind for a corner.
68' Beausejour makes a run into the Cameroon box as he tries to carve out a chance on goal for Chile, but Sanchez's pass towards him is overhit and fails to pick out the full-back.
67' Moukandjo goes close! The forward steps up and unleashes a swerving shot, but it ends up curling just a yard or so wide of the near post.
G. Jara
Yellow Card
66' Moukandjo and Aboubakar link up well once again as the former finds the latter with a clever pass in from the left wing. The striker then tries to skip past Jara, but he's brought crashing to the ground by a late challenge from the defender, who receives a yellow card as a result.
L. Valencia
J. Fuenzalida
64' Chile have made another attacking alteration, with Fuenzalida making way for Leonardo Valencia.
63' Mabouka gets himself into a promising position deep down the right flank before swinging a cross into the Chile box, but it's poorly hit and can't pick out a team-mate in front of goal.
61' Sanchez is able to get involved in the game for the first time as he curls a cross over to Aranguiz, but it takes a deflection off a Cameroon player before being collected by Ondoa.
59' Moukandjo picks up the ball in a pocket of space midway down the left flank and quickly tries to pick out Aboubakar with a lofted pass forward, but it's slightly overhit and can only find the hands of Herrera.
A. Sánchez
E. Puch
58' The Chile fans go wild as Alexis Sanchez comes on to replace Puch.
56' A group of Cameroon players charge towards the ball, but the cross from the corner is a poor one and ends up sailing straight into the hands of Herrera.
55' A Chile attack breaks down, allowing Cameroon to counter quickly. Zambo Anguissa does well to get far down the left wing before swinging a cross over to the far post, where Herrera is forced into pushing the ball behind for a corner.
53' Cameroon have started the second half well and are managing to find more joy in advanced areas. That's largely been down to Chile's full-backs, who are pushing increasingly further forward up the pitch as they desperately try to break the deadlock.
51' The Cameroon back line aren't able to deal with a bouncing ball and allow Vargas to break forward. He twists and turns deep down the right flank and then picks out Diaz, but the midfielder is overrun by defenders and eventually loses out near to the corner flag.
49' Vargas picks up the ball out wide and quickly sends a brilliant cross-field pass over to Vidal. The midfielder meets it well and then tries to tee up Puch, but his pass is cut out by Ngadeu-Ngadjui before it can find his team-mate.
48' Vidal cuts inside from the right flank before unleashing a shot from 25 yards out, but he's off balance as he strikes the ball and sends it high and wide of its intended target.
47' Almost a chance for Moukandjo to put Cameroon in front! Ernest Mabouka immediately goes on the front foot as he flies down the right wing. He then fires a great cross over to the far post, where Moukandjo tries his hardest to latch on to the ball but is unable to do so.
46' We're underway once again!
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
Well, what an end to the first half that was! Chile, who have easily been the better of the two sides so far, looked to have finally broken the deadlock only for VAR to come to Cameroon's rescue. It looked as if Vargas may have been half an inch offside, and it's a decision that has sent the Chile players into a frenzy as they head down the tunnel. Vidal looks particularly angry at the officials.
45' + 1' Chile look to have taken the lead right at the end of the first half, but it's ruled out by VAR! Vidal and Vargas link up brilliantly on the edge of the Cameroon box before the later lifts a beautiful shot over Ondoa and into the back of the net, but, after the Chile celebration comes to an end, the referee overturns his original decision. The Chile players look absolutely irate!
45' The fourth official has indicated that there will be just one minute of added time.
44' Space opens up for Moukandjo and allows him to skip into the Chile box. He can't pick out a team-mate, however, and a poorly placed pass ends up rolling straight into the feet of a white shirt.
43' Vargas side-foots a great pass into the right-hand side of the penalty area and towards Isla. The full-back meets it well before trying to play the ball back to Vargas, but Djoum is there to make sure he can't reach it in front of goal.
42' Aboubakar twists and turns deep down the right flank and does well to force Chile into conceding a corner. Moukandjo steps up and fires a cross into the box that finds Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, but the midfielder's header flies comfortably wide of the goal.
40' What a chance for Vargas! The Cameroon defence is carved apart and presents the Chile number 11 with a great opportunity to fire his side into the lead, but he ends up firing it high over the top of the crossbar. He really should have done better with that!
38' Bassogog, who has struggled to get into the game so far, gets on to the ball and darts down the right flank. He then cuts inside as he heads towards the Chile box, but he's eventually flagged offside as soon as he's closed down by two white shirts.
36' Puch embarks on a lovely run down the left flank as he tries to dance his way into the penalty area, but Christian Bassogog sticks to him well and is eventually able to poke the ball away from behind.
34' Big chance for Moukandjo! Fuenzalida is sloppy in possession over on the right wing and gives the ball away. It's picked up by Moukandjo and allows the forward to break towards the box, but he can't hit the target with his shot from the edge of the penalty area and fires it wide.
32' Cameroon are just about able to hold on! Chile keep pushing forward as they keep the attack alive. Beausejour is eventually able to curl a cross over the Cameroon defence and over to Vargas at the back post, but the Tigres man is flagged offside as soon as he makes contact with the ball.
31' Vidal is clattered into by Siani, resulting in a free-kick for Chile in a dangerous position 35 yards away from goal. Aranguiz steps up and curls a lovely cross into the box, where Vidal is beaten to the ball just as he's about to get a head on it.
29' Great interception by Teikeu! Aranguiz and Vidal link up wonderfully on the edge of the Cameroon penalty area before the Bayer Leverkusen man looks to shoot, but Teikeu is there to poke the ball away at the last possible moment.
27' Another imporant stop by Ondoa! Vargas spins on the edge of the penalty area before poking a pass towards Fuenzalida. The midfielder darts into the box and takes on Ondoa, but the goalkeeper is there to tip the ball round the post and out for another corner.
25' Cameroon are unable to clear the danger fully and allow Chile to come back once again, but this time Fuenzalida can't hit the target with his 25-yard effort and sends it curling wide of the far post.
24' Chance for Edson Puch! Beausejour is able to cut inside from the left flank before picking out Puch. The forward spins and then shoots, but his effort is pushed away by a strong diving save from Ondoa.
22' Aboubakar is left in space just outside of the Chile box and immediately tries to get the better of Medel, but he can't beat the defender and has to settle for a corner. The set-piece is curled into the penalty area and heads towards Ngadeu-Ngadjui, but the centre-back can't reach the ball this time.
20' Mauricio Isla makes a clever run down the right wing as he tries to latch on to a cross-field pass from Vidal. He's unable to make contact with the ball, however, as it's slightly overhit and sails past his outstretched leg.
18' Charles Aranguiz cuts inside from the left wing before picking out Marcelo Diaz. The midfielder takes a quick touch and then shoots from 30 yards out, but his audacious effort is poorly hit and fails to even penetrate the penalty area.
16' Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui! Cameroon are able to push forward on a rare attack through Arnaud Djoum, who is tripped over by Vidal and wins side a free-kick out wide. It's swung into the box and finds Ngadeu-Ngadjui, who rises high and beats Herrera with a bullet header. The referee's whistle had already been blown, however, after Aboubakar pushed Vidal to the ground.
14' Vital touch by Ondoa! Fuenzalida and Vidal link up well deep inside the Cameroon half of the pitch before Vargas fires a low cross into the heart of the box, where Ondoa is just about able to get a hand on the ball to tip it away from Fuenzalida.
12' Huge opportunity for Vincent Aboubakar! A terrible pass from Gary Medel can only find Benjamin Moukandjo, who quickly darts forward. He sprints towards the box and then tees up Aboubakar, whose low shot is well saved by Johnny Herrera before the ball is turned over the top of the crossbar by Gonzalo Jara.
11' Chile fly forward once again on another great attacking move, but Cameroon do well to bring it to an end with strong defending. Sebastien Siani then tries to kick-start a quick counter-attack, but he's all alone on the halfway line and can't find a team-mate before losing possession.
9' Jean Beausejour is left in an acre of space deep down the left flank as Chile push forward once again, but this time he strays slightly offside and the linesman's flag is raised just as he's about to fire a cross into the penalty area.
8' Vidal makes another good run into the Cameroon box as he tries to latch on to a lofted pass forward, but he's unable to do so and loses out to Ondoa before he can get a head on the ball.
6' Vargas breaks into the right-hand side of the Cameroon penalty area after being left all alone. He then tries to cut a pass back to Arturo Vidal, who is beaten to the ball just as he's about to shoot.
4' Another great chance for Chile! Jose Fuenzalida lifts the ball over Adolphe Teikeu inside the Cameroon penalty area before unleashing a great shot, but Ondoa gets down well to keep the effort out at the near post.
2' Eduardo Vargas hits the post! Chile immediately burst forward on a blisteringly quick attack before Vargas unleashes a thumping strike from the edge of the box, but it smashes off the near post after getting the better of Fabrice Ondoa.
1' We're off! Chile get us underway, attacking from right to left.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
Meanwhile, Chile boss Juan Antonio Pizzi has made six alterations to the team that featured in their last outing, with Mauricio Isla, Jean Beausejour, Gonzalo Jara, Jose Fuenzalida, Arturo Vidal and Edson Puch coming into the starting line-up to replace Paulo Diaz, Enzo Roco, Eugenio Mena, Felipe Gutierrez, Leonardo Valencia and Alexis Sanchez, respectively.
Hugo Broos has decided to make nine changes to the Cameroon side that started the defeat against Colombia, with only Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Benjamin Moukandjo retaining their places in a heavily altered starting line-up.
Chile substitutes: Bravo, Mena, Roco, Silva, Sanchez, Sagal, Hernandez, Toselli, Diaz, Gutierrez, Rodriguez, Valencia.
Chile XI (5-3-2): Herrera; Isla, Beausejour, Medel, Jara, Fuenzalida; Aranguiz, Diaz, Vidal; Puch, Vargas.
Cameroon substitutes: Ngamaleu, Zoua, Boumale, Guihoata, Mandjeck, Onana, Ndip Tambe, Toko Ekambi, Owona, Ngwem, Bokwe.
Cameroon XI (4-3-3): Ondoa; Mabouka, Ngadeu-Ngadjui, Teikeu, Fai; Siani, Zambo Anguissa, Djoum; Bassogog, Aboubakar, Moukandjo.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this evening…
The two sides have only met one another on one other occasion, and what an occasion it was! A fiery encounter in Nantes at the 1998 World Cup resulted in a 1-1 draw that sent Chile through to the knockout stage of the competition, but not before Cameroon had got both Rigobert Song and Lauren sent off.
As for Chile, they currently sit in the final of the four automatic qualification spots in their World Cup qualifying group, but Argentina lie just one point behind them with only four games left to play. La Roja comfortably beat Venezuela in March but haven’t performed as well in their subsequent friendly games, with Romania managing to get the better of them after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Russia last week.
A failure to qualify would be only the second time that has happened since 1986, but this year’s Africa Cup of Nations triumph in Gabon showed just how strong Cameroon are when they’re at their best. They beat Egypt 2-1 in the final to win the competition for the first time since 2002, but they had no such luck against Colombia in their last outing, as the South American side thrashed them 4-0 in Tuesday’s friendly.
Group B gets underway with a clash between two sides that, despite managing to win the Africa Cup of Nations and Copa America, respectively, are in danger of not featuring at next year’s World Cup if their performances don’t improve. For Cameroon, it’s been a particularly disappointing qualifying campaign, with draws against Zambia and Algeria leaving them in second place in their group, four points behind leaders Nigeria.
Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Confederations Cup group stage game between Cameroon and Chile at the Otkrytiye Arena.
