Thembinkosi Lorch: Orlando Pirates had to fight back against Sundowns' mind games

The South Africa international explained that they had to find a way to deal with the Brazilians' mind games

Orlando Pirates forward Thembinkosi Lorch has disclosed that Mamelodi Sundowns tried to distract them ahead of their eagerly anticipated PSL clash on Saturday.

The two Gauteng giants played out to a 0-0 draw in an ill-tempered encounter which was played at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Tshwane.

Lorch stated that Sundowns' mind games started prior to the game as the Tshwane giants' security personnel allegedly denied Bucs' bus entry to the stadium gates.

“I’d like to thank God for the talent he has given me. It was a tough day. It started off the pitch where their security personnel did not want to allow us into the Stadium,” Lorch said on SuperSport TV.

Tempers boiled over when a Sundowns fan ran over to the visiting team's bench to confront Pirates assistant coach Rulani Mokwena, who left the Brazilians for the Buccaneers at the end of the 2016/17 season.

“Then it went into the tunnel. So we had to fight. They just wanted to distract us. But we kept on fighting you know," he continued.

“They were playing mind games but we were strong mentally. That’s why we managed to play like this," the former Cape Town All Stars winger added.

Lorch went on to praise the club's fitness coach Franck Plaine, who ensured that the team is fully recovered after their 2-1 league win over Polokwane City at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday.

“The recovery, our fitness coach [made us] to recover from the game we played against Polokwane City. Credit must go to him, the technical team and the coaches for believing in us,” he concluded.
