EXCLUSIVE: Goal's resident spy reveals the Nix are in discussions with New Zealand's top man

With two leading candidates withdrawing their interest in the job, the Wellington Phoenix are close to securing All Whites coach Fritz Schmid to lead their A-League side next season.

The Covert Agent can reveal the club are in discussions with the 58-year-old Swiss, who only took charge of the New Zealand national team in February.

Schmid has most recently been a technical director of the Malaysian national side but was an assistant coach of Austria and FC Basel prior.

His last stint as head coach was over a decade ago when he took control of Switzerland club SC Kriens, with his one and only match in charge of the All Whites to date ending in a 1-0 friendly loss to Canada.

It's unclear whether Schmid will be allowed to combine both national and club jobs if we was to join the Phoenix next season like Ricki Herbert did from 2007 to 2013.

The move for Schmid comes in the wake of prior candidates Hayden Foxe and Jean-Paul De Marigny both pulling out of the race due to concerns with terms offered by the club.

Wellington parted ways with their last coach Darije Kalezic midway through last season with Chris Greenacre taking on the caretaker role for a third time as the Phoenix narrowly avoided the wooden spoon.
