Not much has changed in the May Fifa rankings for Bafana Bafana, a pattern that's become common for the national team in recent times

South Africa's in 64th place in the world, a ranking that doesn't sound good when you consider that we're alongside the likes of Israel and Haiti.

Even though an expanded World Cup will welcome nine African nations, Bafana Bafana's currently 12th which underlines how much the national team needs to improve to meet the mark in the years to come.

Elsewhere, Egypt tops Africa's rankings and Nigeria remained unmoved at number 40.

Gernot Rohr’s men were also in the same position in the world according to the April ratings, due to there being no games in the past month. This ensures they remain fourth in Africa behind Egypt, Senegal, Cameroon and Burkina Faso who maintained their positions too.

Ghana are unchanged in 45th, between Japan (44) and the Czech Republic (46) on the ladder, and ahead of Cote d’Ivoire (48) and Morocco (53).

Overall, Brazil sit at the top of the world with 1672 points, while Argentina are second. Reigning world champions Germany's in third place.

The next edition of the ranking will be published on June 1.
