Orlando Pirates suffer Luvuyo Memela injury blow ahead of Kaizer Chiefs clash

The Buccaneers will be without the tricky attacker, who is nursing an injury as they prepare to face Amakhosi on Saturday

Ahead of the eagerly anticipated Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates have suffered a huge blow with news that midfielder Luvuyo Memela will not feature on Saturday afternoon.

The Buccaneers have released a statement that the attacker will be a notable absentee when they face the Glamour Boys at the FNB Stadiu. The match set to get underway at 15:30.

"In terms of injury doubts, winger Luvuyo Memela has been ruled out for this encounter," reads the statement on the Pirates website.

"'Amigo’ as he is affectionately known, suffered a knee strain and as a result will be out for three weeks. Meanwhile, midfielder Musa Nyatama is due to undergo a late fitness test after picking up a knock in the Cup win over the Chilli Boys," concluded the statement.

The former Cape Town All Stars man was instrumental in the previous Soweto Derby as he netted a brace which helped Pirates beat Chiefs 3-1 at the same venue.

However, Milutin Sredojevic can call on the likes of Thembinkosi Lorch, Augustine Mulenga and Justin Shonga to cause all sorts of problems for the Amakhosi defence in the absence of Memela.

Meanwhile, the Serbian mentor will hope to have midfield kingpin Nyatama for this encounter.

The veteran midfielder hasn't been a regular for the Sea Robbers this season, but his experience will come in handy should he pass his late fitness test.

Should Nyatama fail to recover on time, Pirates would have the likes of Xola Mlambo and Ben Motshwari to get the job done against their nemesis.

The Ghost head to the encounter as favourites as they enjoy an unbeaten run over their rivals and have gone six games without a defeat and come into this clash on the back of a 1-0 win over Chilli Boys last Saturday at Orlando Stadium.

However, coach Giovanni Solinas doesn't want to look at their struggles against Pirates and will pin his hopes on the likes of Siphelele Ntshangase and Khama Billiat to unlock the opposite defence to secure the full three points.

With both sides going to the clash having won their TKO Cup matches over Chippa and Black Leopards, the clash at the Calabash promises to produce fireworks at the iconic 2010 Fifa World Cup hosting venue.
