NPFL Matchday 5: Sunshine Stars target Abia Warriors scalp

5:03 AM GMT+8 28/01/2018
Remo Stars v Sunshine Stars
The Owena Whales will hope to continue their impressive start to the season when they visit Umuahia for the Uchendu Babes on Sunday

Wikki Tourists vs FC Ifeanyi Ubah

The Giant Elephants will be desperate to return to winning ways after their agonizing loss to Kwara United in Ilorin on Wednesday and they are up against the Anambra Warriors who won’t like to be beaten for a second straight game after their stumble to MFM FC.

It promises to be an exciting encounter at the Zaria Road Stadium, Jos and Wikki must produce an exceptional performance if they are to maintain their unbeaten 'home' run since the season started against Ladan Bosso tutored lads.

Both teams may be dragged into the relegation waters if they fail to pick the maximum points with teams from seventh to 14th spot on the league table presently on six points each before the weekend matches.

Akwa United vs Kwara United

The Promise Keepers are on cloud nine after their away win against Niger Tornadoes and a tie against the Harmony Warriors on paper shouldn’t be any problem with the visitors’ morale at its lowest ebb. The hosts could displace Plateau United at the top of the league standings if they are able to whitewash John Obuh's side at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

A loss could crush the fragile confidence Kwara United’s players have left as a result of their first league win on Wednesday against Wikki Tourists.

Lobi Stars vs Niger Tornadoes

This is a north-central derby and it promises to be explosive with both teams losing their last game. The Pride of Benue surrendered their unbeaten record in Damaturu against Yobe Stars while the Ikon Allah Boys bowed at home for the first time after 75 matches after their shock 2-1 defeat to Akwa United on Wednesday in Lokoja.

Lobi Stars under Solomon Ogbeide have been undergoing a renaissance and a home win on Sunday won’t be any surprise judging by the number of quality players they have signed at the beginning of the season.

It will be a tough game for coach Erasmus Onuh and his boys whose flawless opening two games of the season have been undone by their two successive defeats and another defeat could mark the beginning of the end for the newly appointed coach.

Heartland vs Yobe Desert Stars

The Naze Millionaires tried to shake off the disappointment of their home loss to Enugu Rangers with an away draw in Omoku to NPFL new boys, Go Round FC on Wednesday and they will be under intense pressure to replicate their midweek performance with their first victory of the season against the Damaturu side.

Yobe Stars may be having their debut season in the topflight but under Mohammed Babaganaru they have acquired the services of experienced NPFL players and could hurt Heartland on Sunday before their fans in Owerri.

Katsina United vs Go Round

The Chanji Boys should possess enough quality to put this game to bed early in the game but with what the NPFL debutants have shown in all the games they have played this season including their two away games, they won’t go down without a fight.

Katsina United have a new coach in Abdullahi Biffo who has reshaped the team with young players and only Sunshine Stars and Enugu Rangers can tell what they saw before they finally overpowered them in Akure and Enugu respectively in their last two away games.

Anything short of a home win for Katsina United could have a dire consequence on them while Go Round are even more desperate to achieve a positive result with only four points from four matches.

Nasarawa United vs Enugu Rangers

This tie comes up on Monday instead of Sunday at the request of the Solid Miners who played a league game on Thursday against Enyimba and could not have recovered adequately if the game was to go ahead at the weekend.

Kabiru Dogo's side are at the wrong end of the league table and are only separated from the bottom on goals difference. They will be more than desperate to beat the Flying Antelopes irrespective of what they will be storming Lafia with.

Enugu Rangers too will be eager to continue their recent upturn in results in Lafia after their indifferent start to the season which produced two losses on the bounce. Gbenga Ogunbote and his wards must be at their best if they hope not to return to Enugu empty-handed.

Abia Warriors vs Sunshine Stars

The Owena Whales walked away with a draw last season when this fixture was played. Both teams have started the season fairly alright unlike last season when they battled with relegation for the most part of the season.

This time, Abia Warriors will want to justify the recent cash gift to them by governor Okezie Ikpeazu with a home win. New coach Emmanuel Deutsch needs a victory too to convince the Umuahia fans that he is the right man for the job with the uncertainty still hovering around Rafael Everton who was unveiled as coach at the beginning of the season.

El Kanemi Warriors vs Kano Pillars

This is no doubt one of the star matches of the weekend fixtures and it will pitch the Borno Army’s striker, Bello Kofarmata who is on two goals with the current league highest scorer, Junior Lokosa who has scored in all the four games thus far.

The Borno Army are really missing the absence of their coach, Imama Amapakabo who is away with the national team in Morocco for the ongoing CHAN and after they were badly bruised in Jos by Plateau United on Wednesday anything other than a home win could send wrong signals in Maiduguri.

Sai Masu Gida have begun the season brilliantly save for their stumble in Port Harcourt against Rivers United and on the back of a home win against Abia Warriors on Wednesday Pillars will fancy their chances of picking their first road points in Maiduguri in recent seasons.
