Nigeria Pitch Awards have praised the Super Eagles following their 2-0 defeat of Iceland at the Volgograd Arena.
A brace from Ahmed Musa handed the three-time African champions the crucial victory that handed them a lifeline against the debutants.
And as accolades continue to pour on Gernot Rohr’s men, initiator of the prestigious awards congratulated the nation following the Super Eagles’ triumph.
“We congratulate the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari and the government of the nation,” Philips said.
“We commend the President of the Nigeria Football Federation Amaju Pinnick and the Super Eagles crew members who have worked tirelessly from the qualification stages to bring the Super Eagles to Russia for the 2018 World Cup.
“Nigeria went down by 2 goals to Croatia in their opener on 16 June at the Kaliningrad Stadium. This loss put the team and her handlers under pressure to step up performance against Iceland in order to retain any hope of qualifying from the group stage of the competition.
“The match against Iceland was a must win for the team and the team stepped up to keep the expectations of 180 million Nigerians alive.
“We are proud of the general performance of the team and especially of Ahmed Musa who was voted the Nigeria Pitch Awards Striker of the Year in 2014. Since then, Musa has remained consistent in his performance both for country and club.
“He has now become Nigeria’s highest goal scorer in the World Cup with 4 goals and the only Nigerian player to score a brace in two World Cup appearances.”
The Super Eagles face Argentina in a make or break clash on Tuesday in St. Petersburg.
