The South African marksman, who is currently a free agent having left Turkish side Genclerbirligi SK last January, could be coming back home after six years in Europe.
Rantie spent the 2011/12 season with PSL giants Pirates on loan from Stars of Academy, before joining Swedish side Malmö IF at the end of the campaign.
According to Daily Sun, Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane is keen to add the 27-year-old player to his star-studded squad ahead of the 2018/19 season.
“Sundowns have upped in their interest in Tokelo Rantie as they look to make him their third top off-season recruit. Rantie is currently a free agent, without a club after he was released from his contract at Turkish side Genclerbirligi in January,” a report in Daily Sun read.
“But it may not be long before he returns to action in the Brazilians colours, pending the conclusion of a deal with the PSL champions. Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane is said to be keen on the former Bafana Bafana striker, looking to further strengthen his team for the new Premiership season and the Caf competition,” the publication reported.
Other reports have indicated that Sundowns are are eyeing Rantie as a potential replacement for Percy Tau, who has been heavily linked with English Premier League outfit Brighton and Hove Albion.
The two European clubs are said to be interested in Rantie and they could make a move for the experienced marksman ahead of the new season.
Rantie has also turned out for Mozambican sides Ferroviário de Beira and CD Maxaquene, Swedish outfit IFK Hässleholm and English Premier League club AFC Bournemouth.
