JDT through to Malaysia Cup quarters

Johor Southern Tigers
Johor Darul Ta'zim rose to the occasion to secure an impressive win over MIFA that secured their passage to the QF of the 2018 Malaysia Cup.

The journey for the 2017 Malaysia Cup champions continued in dramatic fashion after a 0-3 win over MIFA on Saturday was not only enough for them to reach the next stage of the 2018 competition, but also to finish as champions of Group C.

JDT were dominant right from the start as MIFA opted to protect their place at the top of the standings prior to kickoff by putting out a five man defence in an attempt to hold the away side. K. Devan's side were looking to pounce on the counter attack and twice they broke through in the first half but just couldn't convert their chances.

The Southern Tigers up the tempo in the second half with the MIFA players looking tired and missing the services of Kpah Sherman and Elizeu Melo. Fernando Marquez and Fadhli Shas both hit the post and bar in quick succession before the away team finally broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute.

Marquez was elbowed inside the penalty box and the referee pointed to the penalty box. The Argentine was immediately taken to the hospital after he was unconscious from the contact. Gonzalo Cabrera converted the spot kick to give JDT the lead and MIFA crumbled after that.

Safawi Rasid scored a superb free kick in the 73rd minute to double JDT's lead and he was once again on hand in the 82nd minute to put away JDT's second penalty on the night to give the visitors a handsome 0-3 lead.

At this stage of the match, JDT were virtually through to the knockout stage while MIFA's progress hang in the balance. But a late goal in Kota Bahru meant Kelantan goes through instead of MIFA by virtue of a better goal difference.
