Danny Ings has been ruled out of England's clash with Estonia on Friday with an ankle injury.

The Liverpool striker suffered an ankle problem during his side's 1-1 draw with Everton on Sunday and subsequently sat out training on Monday.

It was hoped he would recover in time for the Three Lions' latest Euro 2016 qualifier at Wembley but he has failed to do so, while doubts remain over the fitness of Jonjo Shelvey.

England boss Roy Hodgson also revealed he plans to play midfielder Michael Carrick after playing down his absence from Thursday's training session.

Gary Cahill will captain England for the first time, with Hodgson admitting he felt it was better not to risk the fitness of first choice skipper Wayne Rooney.
