NEROCA FC's Subhash Singh was awarded the Fans' Player of the Year in the annual award ceremony of the Football Players Association of India held in Kolkata on Tuesday. The winger was a live wire for NEROCA in I-League despite not playing in his natural position.
"Gift (Raikhan) insisted that I play on the wings. So I played both on the left and right wing. I had problems in the beginning but slowly I had to adjust my game. The coach constantly instructed me throughout the season. I am happy that my performance did not dip even after not playing in my orthodox position," said Singh to Goal.
The 28-year old Manipuri could not fire his team to the title as they fell short by three points behind champions Minerva Punjab. He thinks that the consecutive losses in January against Minerva and Shillong Lajong at home derailed their title charge.
"We had many chances to close the championship. It was our ill-fortune that we could not do so. We lost important points against Minerva Punjab and Shillong Lajong. Even if we had won against Lajong then also our job would have been done. Those two matches were the turning point," explained Singh.
In his career, he had the opportunity to represent both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan. He also made his India U-23 debut while playing for the Red and Golds back in 2009. The forward did not hide his desire of coming back to Kolkata and once again don the colours of the Kolkata giants.
"Mohun Bagan and East Bengal are the biggest clubs in India. Who doesn't want to play for them? I accept that there is too much pressure here in Kolkata but the fun of playing here is unparalleled. When I play against them I always try to put in the extra effort. You want to outperform yourself when you turn up against these clubs," mentioned Singh.
NEROCA have already begun their pre-season from June 18 under the tutelage of assistant coach Shyamjai Meitei and head Manuel Retamero will join the squad later this month.
