Kerala-born Rafi was a part of the Sachin Tendulkar co-owned outfit which played in the finale of Indian Super League (ISL) 2016. The prolific striker was the third Indian to register his name on the score-sheet in an ISL final following Mohammed Rafique for Atletico de Kolkata in 2014, and Thongkhosiem Haokip for FC Goa in 2015.

Rafi, known for his aerial prowess, scored 8 goals for Kerala Blasters in his 25 appearances in two seasons of the ISL.

Incidentally, this will be Rafi's second stint with Mumbai FC, having earlier played for them between 2013 and 2015, wherein he scored 13 goals. The 2009-10 I-League Player of the Year is expected to partner Brazilian forward Anderson da Silva up front for The Yellows.
