The former Nigeria international believes the Pride of Benue have what it takes to keep their Caf Champions League hopes alive

Garba Lawal believes Lobi Stars can get a favourable result in this weekend’s Caf Champions League versus Mamelodi Sundowns if they play as a team.

The former Super Eagles stars posits that with an experienced coach like Solomon Ogbeide as handler, the Markudi-based outfit can leave Pretoria unscathed.

Yaya Kone and Mathias got the goals as the Nigerians won the first leg 2-1 but the return leg is crucial as they must avoid defeat to stand a chance of progressing.

“When you want success as a team, you play as a team and thankfully Lobi Stars have a very experienced coach in Solomon Ogbeide; he was the assistant coach back then when I was playing for Julius Berger in 1993-94,  with the players he have, I expect him to come up with a formidable plan for Sundowns,” Lawal told Goal.

“This is a massive game and I hope Lobi Stars are well prepared for this, I remember when I used to play for Esperance and the kind of preparations that we put into Champions League games.

“Lobi Stars have to play as a team because South African clubs are very tricky when they are playing on the continent, they have to take that game like a cup final and also take their chances,  I know they can have a point there and still go all the way."

He also warned the team not to repeat Enugu Rangers' mistake in the Caf Confederation Cup.

“They have to avoid contacts in the box because I watched Rangers and Etoile du Sahel game when the Tunisians came to Nigeria, I said they can go back with the three points and they did," he continued.

“Lobi Stars have to be careful because the South Africans are also quite tricky, they must avoid contacts, especially in the box.

“It should be mass defence, mass attack and Lobi Stars have to take their chance even if it is a half chance, with that they can even come up with a win."
