The Flying Antelopes were almost eliminated but the goalkeeper’s heroics saw them through and he is pleased with their advancement

Enugu Rangers’ Femi Thomas has expressed joy after his goalkeeping heroics inspired his side to a 3-2 victory on penalties over Niger Tornadoes feeders at Lekan Salami Stadium on Tuesday.

The Flying Antelopes were facing a possible easily exit from the Federation Cup after being held to a goalless draw at the end of regulation time, but escape eliminated in a penalty shootout.

And the goalkeeper is less bothered about their shootout win as he insists reaching the next stage of the competition was the most important and not the manner the won.

“I am happy doing my own bit to make sure we [Enugu Rangers] qualified for the next stage,” Thomas told Goal.

“We played against a young and stubborn side and we missed a lot of scoring opportunities. I also think our eagerness to score was another factor why we missed countless chance.

“I am grateful to God that we came out victorious in this match and see us through to the next stage. I am really not bothered about how we achieved this but happy we qualified. That’s the most important.

“So far were still in the competition, we must remain strong and work harder to improve with each and every game. We will take it a game after the other as we hope to become Federation Cup champions, in the end, this year.”

Having advanced, Gbenga Ogunbote’s side will face Niger National League side Kebbi  United in the Round of 32 on Sunday, September 16, 2018.
