He can be brilliant on his day but can also be downright frustrating at times. Welcome to the life of Edin Dzeko.
After Roma’s big win over CSKA Moscow Dzeko noted how his team needs consistency starting with him, and he definitely hit the nail on his head. The Bosnian is no doubt an excellent striker but his lack of consistency prevents him from truly being world-class.
When he was at Manchester City, Dzeko won multiple honours with the club including the English Premier League. At Roma however he has yet to win anything significant with the club as he and the Giallorossi’s form is too unpredictable.
While in England Dzeko was part of a much bigger squad which was never short of quality. Should he fail to perform another quality striker was on hand to replace him such as Sergio Aguero. But Roma do not have the budget of City and are dependent upon him to score goals.
Should he fluff his lines then a similar result to the one suffered against SPAL will become a norm. On the other hand when the 32 year old produces his best it more often than not brings excellent results as seen in Roma’s Champions League run last season.
It was in Europe where he shone the brightest leading the capital club out of the group stage where they went toe to toe against the likes of Chelsea and Atletico Madrid. Some of the goals he netted were beautiful and crucial. The current campaign has already seen him bag five goals along with Lionel Messi in the competition.
Indeed this season has been far from the best for Roma and Dzeko. For that to turn around the Bosnian must start delivering and abandon his inconsistent ways. And both he and the club will need to do that fast because they will face a Napoli side next who will show no mercy.
