The Premier Soccer League (PSL) clash between Bloemfontein Celtic and Cape Town City has been called off following violent scenes at the Petrus Molemela Stadium in the Free State.

With the score evenly poised at 0-0 a pitch invasion took place with 23 minutes played, forcing both sets of players and coaches to seek refuge in the dressing room and prompted the intervention of the South African Police Services.

According to reports, clashes then ensued between fans and security personnel as calm failed to be restored and subsequently officials took the decision to abandon the match due to the security concerns.

Meanwhile, a statement issued by both clubs confirmed the final outcome of Sunday's match, while Celtic also stated that all fans had been removed from the stadium.

“With assistance from members of Public Order Policing, supporters have left the stadium after the continued disruptions,” Celtic said in a statement issued on Twitter.

City will regard the abandonment of the match as a massive blow to their momentum as they were beginning to find their feet in the clash.

It now remains to be seen when the match will be replayed and whether or not Celtic will face any punishment for the pitch invasion and events that followed.

Furthermore, the PSL has also issued a statement condemning the incident but has stated that they are still waiting on the match commissioner's report for what transpired.
