South Africa international Lars Veldwijk has joined Dutch Eerste Divisie side Sparta Rotterdam.

The Castle Lords snapped up the 26-year-old marksman from Dutch Eredivisie outfit FC Groningen. He signed a one-year deal with an option for an extra year.

Veldwijk, who has played for Norwegian side  Aalesunds and Belgian club KV Kortrijk, is looking forward to his new adventure in Rotterdam West.

"I chose to play for Sparta Rotterdam. After having discussions with the technical staff it became clear that Sparta's ambition fits very well with my plans. The club wants to gain promotion,” Veldwijk told the club’s official website.

“The First Division will be a very interesting edition this season with many clubs that want to play at the top well known, but we would like to take on that challenge. Personally, I also enjoy returning to this region and Sparta is an excellent choice,” he continued.

Rotterdam technical manager Henk van Stee discussed the signing of the lanky forward, who has also turned out for English side Nottingham Forest.

"With the arrival of Lars Veldwijk, we are already filling the striking position for the coming season at an early stage. Lars is a striker known as a player, who can score goals. He has not been a top scorer of the First Division for nothing,” he said.

“We are faced with a lot of competition in attracting players, not only from clubs in the First Division, but also from the Eredivisie,” he continued.

“Lars was of course national and international at other clubs in the picture, but we also tapped teams from the Eredivisie who wanted to attract him,” Stee revealed.

“We have the same ambition as Lars, promotion to the Eredivisie! This is an important goal for the club and Lars wants to make a big contribution to this, so that after Sparta he can make a nice step in his football career,” he concluded.
