Marco Asensio says he was never offered the No. 7 shirt at Real Madrid once Cristiano Ronaldo vacated it over the summer.

The 22-year-old is among those to have been charged with the task of filling the void created by the departure of a five-time Ballon d’Or winner from the Santiago Bernabeu.

He has made an impressive start to that task, with a first goal of the season helping to edge Real past Espanyol on Saturday.

Asensio recorded that effort with 20 on his back, with the option to take an iconic jersey having never been put to him.

The Spain international told reporters: "They didn't offer me the No. 7.

"The club never said anything to me about it and I didn't have the chance to decide."

With Real deciding not to pass their No. 7 to somebody already on their books, they eventually presented it to Mariano Diaz following his return to the Spanish capital from Lyon.

Asensio has no issue with that, with there no desire on his part to follow in the footsteps of Ronaldo, Raul and Co.

Instead, the highly-rated playmaker has his sights set on a number more associated with players in his position.

As a key creative cog, Asensio sees himself as the natural successor to Luka Modric in Real’s No. 10 shirt.

"It's a number I always liked," he said.

"But now it's in good hands. In the future I would like it."

For now, Asensio is looking to further his development as an established senior star.

Madrid skipper Sergio Ramos has called for the youngster to be given more responsibility, saying he is ready to take more “stones” in his metaphorical backpack.

"Give me all the stones you want," Asensio said on those calls from his captain.

"That's what I'm here for."
