The AGL's recognition as Asia's best league is a result of the efforts of the Pro League Committee.

As per the Asian Football Federation's (AFC) Club Competitions Ranking which were released on February 14, the Arabian Gulf League (AGL) is currently the top Asian league.

Having earned 96.56 points, the AGL leads the rankings ahead of Korea's K-League in second place with 89.23 points. Qatar Stars League (QSL) came third with 78.84 points while Saudi Pro League occupied fourth place registering 72.49 points ahead of Japanese J-League in at fifth with 65.79 points.

Al Ain is the only AGL outfit to ever win the AFC Champions League (ACL) in 2003 and have finished as runners-up in 2005 and 2016. Al Ahli is the only other team from UAE top division to make it to the finals, finishing as runners-up in 2015.

Despite their lack of dominance in the continental tournament, the AGL has been on the rise in recent times, particularly with Al Ain's final berth last year. The league's rise to prominence is a result of continuous work based on a sound foundation and a clear vision by all parts of the professional hierarchy as well as continued investment.

Waleed Al Hosani, Acting CEO of the Pro League Committee considers the AFC's ranking of the Arabian Gulf League a fair assessment.
