Manchester United v Arsenal Live Commentary, 01/10/2019

1 - 1
S. McTominay (45)
P. Aubameyang (58)
Old Trafford

Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
United are next in action on Thursday in the Europa League on the road at AZ, while Arsenal are at home in the same competition on the same day against Standard Liege.
The contest between Manchester United and Arsenal ends all square as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's second-half strike cancelled out Scott McTominay's fine effort at Old Trafford. It took McTominay's stunning goal on the stroke of half-time to bring the game to life. The second period was a better spectacle, although the two teams still struggled for quality. Bukayo Saka teed up Aubameyang for the equaliser, who clipped the ball over David de Gea into the net. The goal was initially disallowed for offside, but VAR overturned the decision. The hosts had good chances to win the game as McTominay somehow missed the target with a close-range header, while Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford were denied by Bernd Leno. At the other end Bukayo Sako saw his attempt well blocked by Maguire. A draw was probably a fair outcome, although it will suit the Gunners far more than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men.
90' + 5' Ceballos sees his cross cleared by the first man before the referee ends the contest.
90' + 4' Nelson gets brought down by Tuanzebe on the right flank and Arsenal will have one final chance to send a cross into the box.
90' + 3' Space opens up in the final third for Greenwood and he pulls the trigger on the edge of the box, but it curls harmlessly wide of the post.
90' + 2' CHANCE! Willock makes a charging run into the United box before offloading to Nelson. He goes for the strike first time on his left foot, but it's tame and De Gea gathers with ease.
90' + 1' SAVE! Rashford goes for goal and he bends his effort around the wall, but Leno is there to push it away with a strong hand. Greenwood has the opening on the rebound, only to scuff his attempt.
90' There will be four minutes of added time.
90' McTominay drives forward from the middle of the park and he draws the foul from David Luiz on the edge of the box.
89' BLOCK! Ceballos sees a cross-field pass intercepted by Young, who feeds McTominay 25 yards from goal. He lines up a strike, but this time the Gunners are in place to repel his attempt.
88' Aubameyang steals possession and he looks for support on the edge of the box. It comes from Ceballos, but he skews an attempted strike well wide of the post.
86' Nelson sends a poor cross into the box and United break down the left flank. James tries to get the better of Willock, but the midfielder holds his composure to win a throw-in.
86' Nelson fires the ball low into the box and Xhaka almost pounces, but Lindelof is there to force it behind.
85' Arsenal work the ball down the right flank towards Chambers and he wins a corner off the legs of Tuanzebe.
83' Rashford battles for the ball once again down the right flank. Kolasinac gets the better of the exchange, prompting a foul from the England man. He has to be careful having already been booked in the first half.
81' Pogba hangs a cross to the back post for Rashford to attack, but he collides with Leno as the keeper tries to make the claim. Arsenal get the free-kick.
J. Willock
B. Saka
80' Saka is withdrawn after a promising performance for Willock.
79' United try to loft a deep cross to the back post. McTominay keeps the attack alive by hooking the ball back into the middle. It's cleared as far as Fred, who scuffs an attempt well over the bar from 20 yards.
78' James gets the better of Nelson down the left flank and he fires a low ball towards the near post that Chambers has to send behind for a corner.
G. Xhaka
Yellow Card
77' Xhaka brings down Greenwood with a hard challenge and goes into the book.
76' It's an open game. Both sides will continue to have opportunities and it could well be decided by a moment of magic or a mistake.
R. Nelson
N. Pépé
74' Pepe's difficult night comes to an end as Nelson enters the action.
M. Greenwood
Andreas Pereira
Manchester United
74' Greenwood is on for the hosts in the final third to replace Pereira.
J. Lingard
Manchester United
74' Lingard is withdrawn for Fred for the home side.
73' SAVE! Maguires almost launches a rocket into the top right corner, but Leno gets across to push it past the post. Pepe gave away possession for the visitors and was almost punished.
72' Xhaka brings down McTominay on the charge and the referee awards a free-kick. Young floats the ball to the back post from the set-piece where Maguire works it into the middle, but Guendouzi is the first man there to clear the danger.
71' Rashford runs into the right channel for the home side and he fires a low ball across the face of goal that travels behind. He wants a United corner, but the referee points for a goal-kick. It should have been a United corner, but it evens up the incorrect decision.
70' WHAT A MISS! McTominay should double his tally for the evening, but he heads over from point-blank range. Young lifts a dangerous cross to the back post and the Scot comes in unmarked with a free header, only to plant his effort over the bar.
69' James probes down the left flank and wins a corner off the legs of Sokratis, although it appeared to have come off the winger last. Arsenal will not be happy if this goes in for the home side.
J. Lingard
Yellow Card
Manchester United
68' Lingard dives in on Guendouzi on the edge of the box as the midfielder tries to play himself out of trouble. The referee awards the foul and books the United midfielder.
66' Saka tries to release Pepe behind the United defensive line, but Tuanzebe makes an important intervention on the edge of the box to nudge the ball back to De Gea.
65' Saka has been directly involved in four goals in his four appearances in all competitions this season (one goal, three assists)
64' CLOSE! Pogba is inches away from restoring United's lead. Pereira's strike on the edge of the box is diverted into the Frenchman's path. He lines a curling effort on his right foot, but it just drifts wide of the right hand post.
63' McTominay winds up an attempt from distance encouraged by the home fans, but he sends this one well wide of the post.
62' Aubameyang first Arsenal player to score seven or more goals in Gunners' first 7 PL games of a season since Dennis Bergkamp in 97-98.
60' BLOCK! Arsenal open up United down the right flank and Chambers fires a low ball into the middle. Saka pounces in the middle, but he sees his goalbound effort diverted over the top by Maguire.
B. Saka
58' Saka releases Aubameyang and he does the rest with a fine finish.
P. Aubameyang
58' GOALLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! AUBAMEYANG'S STRIKE IS AWARDED!!! The linesman sees his decision overturned by VAR. Tuanzebe loses possession in the final third and Saka releases Aubameyang in the right inside channel. He carries the ball into the middle of the box before lifting his effort over De Gea into the net. The official believed that the Gaboense was beyond the last man, but Maguire played him onside. It's level at Old Trafford.
58' VAR! Aubameyang has the ball in the net, but the linesman rules out his effort for offside. However, VAR will check the decision.
56' Saka is fouled in the final third and it leads to a corner after the free-kick is cleared behind by United. However, once again the Gunners caught on the break by the home side. Guendouzi has to cover the middle of the box and head over his own bar to prevent Rashford latching on to Pereira's cross.
Dani Ceballos
L. Torreira
55' Ceballos comes on to the pitch to replace Torreira.
54' There was a VAR check on the handball and it confirmed the referee's decision. United may feel aggrieved.
53' United win a corner down the right flank and they work the ball short. Lingard collects and fires a cross into the middle. It takes a deflection and travels towards the near post where it strikes Kolasinac's arm. However, the referee turns down the appeal for a penalty.
52' CHANCE! Torreira spurns an opening to get Arsenal back into the game. Aubameyang finds space on the right flank and he sends a low cross into the box. Torreira is unmarked in the area, but he he scuffs his attempt on the half-volley and allows De Gea to gather.
51' The Gunners probe on the edge of the box and Torreira tries to weave his way past Pogba, only to lose his footing at the vital moment.
50' Arsenal win a corner through the pressing of Saka and Pepe. They work the set-piece short before Pepe sees his cross cleared as far as Aubameyang on the left flank. He curls his delivery into the middle, but De Gea comes off his line to claim.
48' United probe down the right flank through James and Rashford, but the Gunners are able to keep them at bay as Sokratis clears the danger.
46' We're back underway at Old Trafford.
Unai Emery will be fuming with his team. They allowed United to break on the counter with ease before McTominay rifled his effort home. The Gunners have been too passive against a Red Devils side low on confidence. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has not been involved enough in the contest, while Nicolas Pepe has been poor to say the least. Bukayo Saka has been a positive outlet and Arsenal may have to turn to the 18-year-old to get them out of trouble.
Scott McTominay's strike has handed Manchester United a vital lead at the break over Arsenal at Old Trafford. The two sides were awful for the majority of the opening period, lacking quality all over the pitch. However, space began to open up towards the end of the half as Bukayo Saka and Matteo Guendouzi were denied by David de Gea before the Red Devils sprung on the counter. Daniel James was the spark as his low cross evaded Marcus Rashford at first, but the forward recycled possession to pick out McTominay. The Scotland international launched a strike that found the top left corner leaving Bernd Leno with no chance. It was not deserved, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his men will take it.
45' There will be two minutes of added time.
M. Rashford
Manchester United
45' Rashford latches on to the loose ball and works it back towards the edge of the box where McTominay collects and scores.
S. McTominay
Manchester United
45' GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!! MCTOMINAY SCORES A STUNNER!!! 1-0!!!! United break the deadlock on the counter. James leads the break out from the back and races the length of the field. He fires a low ball across the face of goal that evades Rashford. However, the forward collects and works it back McTominay. The Scot pulls the trigger on a right-footed effort that soars into the top left corner with the aid of a deflection. United needed that.
44' SAVE! Lindelof misses an interception at the back and Saka is through on goal. He goes for a low strike towards the right bottom corner, but De Gea gets down to make the stop. Guendouzi goes for the rebound, but De Gea gets across to the post to push it wide.
43' United break with pace and Pereira collects on the right flank. He goes for the strike at goal, but can only fire his effort straight Kolasinac, who diverts the ball out for a corner.
42' CHANCE! Pogba uses his strength to barge Guendouzi off the ball and he releases Rashford through into the left inside channel. However, the forward slips as he strikes the ball and it's blocked by Sokratis into the arms of Leno. Rashford looks very low on confidence.
A. Young
Yellow Card
Manchester United
41' Guendouzi beats Young and then is clattered by the full-back. The United skipper goes into the book.
40' James tries to spark United into life with a neat piece of control and low cross into the box, but David Luiz is on hand to clear the danger.
38' Pereira lifs the free-kick into the box for Maguire, but the defender is caught offside. It has been that sort of game so far, lacking in quality all over the pitch.
37' McTominay and Pepe collide in the Arsenal half and both players remain down. The referee initially awards the free-kick to Arsenal, but then changes his mind to hand the set-piece to the home side.
35' SAVE! Saka probes down the left flank and he lifts a cross to the back post. Pepe takes it out of the air before shooting through a crowd of United defenders. The strike is low towards the right bottom corner, but De Gea gets down to make the stop.
33' Xhaka wastes the free-kick for Arsenal from 35 yards out, clipping his cross to Chambers, but the right-back cannot keep the ball in play despite a lunge.
Andreas Pereira
Yellow Card
Manchester United
32' Pereira brings down Guendouzi on the charge and goes into the book. United are losing their discipline.
32' There are muted appeals for a penalty for the Gunners as Saka drives into the box. His attempted low cross strikes McTominay, but the referee dismisses the claims before Kolasinac is caught offside.
31' OVER! Aubameyang makes a probing run to the edge of the box before he gets stopped McTominay. Saka gathers the loose ball and tees up Pepe for a strike on his left foot, but he can only direct his attempt over the bar.
30' Pereira's shot after 29 minutes was the first effort in this match. The longest wait for a first attempt in a single PL match this season
29' SAVE! Pereira wins the ball in the middle of the park and charges towards goal. He uses skill to weave his way past David Luiz before firing at goal, but Leno gets down well to save his left-footed strike.
M. Rashford
Yellow Card
Manchester United
27' Rashford closes down David Luiz in possession and then chases down the loose ball. Sokratis is there first and gets caught by the striker's sliding challenge. Not the best tackle and he gets a booking.
25' Lingard puts Leno under pressure at the back and the keeper just manages to scramble his clearance away in time. A worrying moment for the Gunners.
24' Pepe lines up the free-kick, but he gets his delivery all wrong, sending his cross straight out for a goal-kick.
23' Saka shows off his skills down the left flank and he draws a foul from Young in a decent crossing position for the Gunners.
22' James probes down the left flank and he fires a low ball towards the near post, but there's no red shirt there to attack the cross, allowing Leno to gather with ease.
20' Two crosses from the left from David Luiz narrowly miss their targets in the middle of the United box, with the last one just evading Aubameyang's head.
19' Guendouzi wins the ball in the middle of the park and releases Saka for a run at the United defence. Lingard brings down the winger, but it's a free-kick only for the Gunners just outside the centre circle.
18' Tuanzebe has to deal with the threat of Chambers on the charge down the Arsenal right flank. However, he fends off the defender before booting the ball off his legs to win a goal-kick.
16' James has his first raid at Chambers on a yellow card, but the Arsenal man does well to get his body across to block off the winger and guide the ball out for a goal-kick.
14' The Gunners have space on the counter and Kolasinac drives down the left flank before firing a low ball into the box. De Gea gathers with ease, but Aubameyang was on his heels and should have been alert to the opening.
13' Pogba collects in the middle of the park and he tries to send an ambitious pass down the left flank for James, but he sends it out of play for a throw-in.
11' David Luiz is caught in possession, but fortunately for the defender, Rashford cannot send the ball immediately into the box.
C. Chambers
Yellow Card
10' Chambers pulls back James on the charge and goes into the book.
9' Maguire meets Young's delivery into the box from the corner and he nods it towards Rashford. However, the forward cannot react in time and it strikes his leg before heading out for a goal-kick.
8' United build down the left flank and James has a dart at Chambers. He gets space to fire a left-footed cross into the box that deflects back off Sokratis and on to Chambers before heading out for a corner.
7' Aubameyang lifts a ball over to Pepe on the right flank and he takes a step inside to curl a cross into the box, but it's comfortable for De Gea to claim.
5' Kolasinac almost sells Leno short with a backpass, but the Arsenal keeper is sharp off his line to clear ahead of Rashford.
4' Maguire rises highest in the box to head clear the resulting corner. A solid start at the back for the home side.
3' Xhaka tries to test Tuanzebe with a ball over the top for Chambers on the right flank, but the defenders does well to nod it behind for a corner.
1' Tuanzebe lines up at left-back rather than on the right for United. Young starts at right-back.
1' We're underway at Old Trafford.
Manchester United are unbeaten in their last 12 Premier League games against Arsenal at Old Trafford (W8 D4 L0) since a 1-0 defeat in September 2006.
Emery made several changes to his side for the EFL Cup win over Forest. He reverts back to his Premier League side that beat Aston Villa last time out. Chambers gets the nod to replace the suspended Ainsley Maitland-Niles, while Torreira starts ahead of Ceballos, who drops to the bench.
Solskjaer has reverted back to the majority of his side that started the defeat to West Ham tonight. Pogba and Lingard retain their places from the EFL Cup win in the United midfield, while Tuanzebe gets the nod to start in place of the injured Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back.
ARSENAL SUBS: Daniel Ceballos, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Rob Holding, Reiss Nelson, Emiliano Martinez, Joe Willock, Gabriel Martinelli.
ARSENAL (4-3-3): Bernd Leno; Calum Chambers, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, David Luiz, Sead Kolasinac; Lucas Torreira, Granit Xhaka, Matteo Guendouzi; Bukayo Saka, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Nicolas Pepe.
MANCHESTER UNITED SUBS: Juan Mata, Marcos Rojo, Fred, Sergio Romero, Mason Greenwood, Nemanja Matic, Brandon Williams.
MANCHESTER UNITED (4-2-3-1): David de Gea; Axel Tuanzebe, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Ashley Young; Scott McTominay, Paul Pogba; Andreas Pereira, Jesse Lingard, Daniel James; Marcus Rashford.
Arsenal have not been perfect in recent weeks, but are still unbeaten in their last five matches in all competitions. They fought back to defeat Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium 3-2 last week, despite being reduced to 10 men when Ainsley Maitland-Niles was dismissed in the first half. Calum Chambers and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored in the final 10 minutes to secure the three points. The Gunners eased past Nottingham Forest in their EFL Cup clash, putting five goals past the Championship side. Old Trafford has not been a happy venue for Arsenal in the past, failing to win on their last 12 visits. Unai Emery and his team have to capitalise on United's woes this evening.
Manchester United are in dire need of a victory this evening - not only to improve their standing in the Premier League, but to lift the mood around the club. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men put forward a meek performance last time out in the top flight in their 2-0 defeat to West Ham United on the road. Although the Norwegian made changes to his side, the Red Devils needed penalties to see off Rochdale in the EFL Cup during the week. United have to find a performance tonight to get back to winning ways in the Premier League, which will ease the pressure on their manager.
Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the Premier League clash between Manchester United and Arsenal at Old Trafford.
