'The worst team in the league' - Markus Babbel's bizarre claim ahead of Sydney derby

Mind games from the German coach?

With many quickly writing off Western Sydney Wanderers chances this season, let alone in the Sydney derby on Saturday, coach Markus Babbel has described his side as 'the worst in the league'.

After a salvaging a 1-1 draw with Perth Glory last Sunday, the Wanderers must overturn a horrible record against Sydney FC this weekend and the German coach appears to be downplaying their chances.

While full of praise for the Sky Blues, a hard to read Babbel took a rather unusual shot at his side - perhaps in reference to early criticism they have received.

"We know it’s a difficult game because this is a good side," Babbel said.

"One of the favourites for the title and we are the worst team in the league so we try and get a result again.

"We know it’s not easy. You see this is an experienced team, they know what they want to do. If they get a chance, they score."

Sydney FC began their season with a 1-1 draw against Adelaide United having scored with their one good chance through Adam Le Fondre.

With Western Sydney winning just one of the last 13 derbies, Babbel stressed victory and not simply a draw is his priority.

"First of all I go into a game and I want to win a game," he said.

"Doesn’t matter which side you play.

"But like in Perth if you can’t win, you don’t have to lose, so then we take the point."

While both the Sky Blues and Wanderers avoided any VAR drama in their opening games, all other matches in Round 1 were interrupted by it.

Having seen it deployed in his native Germany, Babbel backed VAR, but admitted it must be improved upon.

"It is a good thing," he said.

"It’s very difficult for the referees. Still mistakes happen, but you have to learn from it."
