The return of the Telkom Knockout Cup Last tournament attracted attention from South African football fans this weekend as teams battled for a spot in the next stage.

In the opening matches on Saturday, it was defending champions Bidvest Wits, who visited Free State Stars at the Goble Park Stadium in the afternoon and the match got underway at 15:30.

Scottish striker Simon Murray netted for the reigning TKO champions as early as the first minute to see the Clever Boys through to the next stage against the hosts.

Wits made it two wins in a row over Ea Lla Koto this season after securing a convincing 3-0 win in their Premier Soccer League (PSL) right at the start of this term.

In the other match of the day, Baroka FC hosted Golden Arrows at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium at 15:30, and coach Wedson Nyirenda's troops were in a rampant mood.

Bakgaga Ba Mphahlele managed to turn the corner in a Cup competition as they secured a 2-0 win over the struggling Abafana Bes'thende through goals from Collins Makgaga and Tebogo Sodi.

The Limpopo-based side will now breathe a sigh of relief following this win as they have had a poor run in their league camoaign as they continue to sit at he bottom of the table.

With the league having scheduled two matches at night, Maritzburg United hosted Chippa United at the Harry Gwala Stadium and the match got underway at 20:15.

Coach Fadlu Davids' men had a tough assignment in front of them where they also had to fight harder to regain their confidence as far as winning is concerned.

Having had a lacklustre start to their campaign so far, the Team of Choce is seen as a different outfit compared to the one that challenged on all fronts last season.

Maritzburg reached the final of the Nedbank Cup final as they lost to coach Luc Eymael's Stars at the Cape Town Stadium, but they have been struglling in the league so far.

Although they started on a backfoot against the Lions of the North where Moeketsi Sekola netted for Owen Da Gama's side in the 40th minute, the hosts fought back to regain their confidence and made it 1-1 through Siphesihle Ndlovu in the 75th minute before Mohau Mokate scored the winner in the 88th minute to hand United a win thus reaching the next stage of the tournament.

The Clever Boys, Bakgaga Ba Mphahlele, the Team of Choice have joined the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates in the next round of the competition and the draw for the quarter-final will be conducted next week.
