Newcastle signing Schar ready for new challenge in 'best in the world' Premier League

Having completed a move to St. James' Park from Deportivo, the Switzerland international is relishing the prospect of England's top flight

Newcastle United signing Fabian Schar has affirmed that he is ready for the challenge of starring in the Premier League, which he dubbed the "best league in the world".

The Switzerland defender moved to St. James' Park from Deportivo in a deal worth a reported £3 million ($3.5m)

He spent just a single season in La Liga, having previously starred at Basel and Hoffenheim while picking up 42 caps for his nation.

And as he prepares to team up with Magpies manager Rafa Benitez, Schar admitted he could not wait to get going at his new club.

"The Premier League is the best league in the world, you have so many good players and many good teams. Almost everybody can beat everybody so that is what I am looking forward to," he explained to Sky Sports News.

"With the great stadiums and all the fans, it's going to be fantastic next season. I'm really happy to be here. England is the best league in the world.

"I need some training and some more pre-season because the season is coming quick, and I have to be ready in maybe just two weeks. I'm really looking forward to it.

"I have had maybe two or three training sessions with team-mates, and one game, so I need some time but what I have seen is that we have a good team and quality in the squad."

Having finished 10th in their first season back in the Premier League, Newcastle have so far made four signings in their bid to consolidate their position in the top flight.

Aside from Schar, Martin Dubravka, Ki Sung-Yeung and Yoshinori Muto have joined Benitez so far in the summer window.
