Hakim Ziyech's brace in the second half was all Herve Renard's men needed to grab a win at the Stade Mohammed V in Friday's Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Prior to the match, Morocco have failed in previous attempts to defeat next year's Afcon hosts, Cameroon in an international outing.
However, the win comes as a relief after last year's loss in Yaounde and shot the Atlas Lions to the summit of the Group B standings with 10 points from five games - to open a two-point lead over the Indomitable Lions.
And Benatia and Hakimi, in a celebratory mood, have described the result as an 'important victory' as they near a spot in the 2019 continental tournament.
"Important victory for the team, for my coach, for the people, Al Hamdoulillah. A lion remains a lion," Benatia wrote on Instagram.
"Victory is important to bring us closer to achieving the desired goal!," Hakimi posted.
