Maxwel Cornet's double boost Lyon's Champions League chances

The Ivorian forward scored a pair of goals as Bruno Genesio's men saw off their rivals in Sunday's Clash of the Olympics

Maxwel Cornet was on target twice as Lyon defeated Marseille 3-0 in Sunday’s Ligue 1 fixture to boost their Uefa Champions League qualification chances.

Cornet, who made his 10th league start of the season at the Stade Velodrome, was impressive for the visitors and scored a goal in each half of the encounter.

The 22-year-old opened the scoring in the 24th minute after firing his effort past goalkeeper Steve Mandanda from close range.

After Marseille were reduced to 10 men in the second half, Moussa Dembele doubled Lyon’s lead in the 84th minute and Cornet wrapped up the win two minutes later with his fourth league goal of the season.

The result moved Lyon to third in the Ligue 1 table, securing a spot in the Champions League qualifying rounds, with 66 points from 36 matches.
