Reds set to sign Dutch striker

2019-01-31T05:07:20Z

Adelaide United might be about to solve their striker woes with Jordy Thomassen linked to a deadline day move.

The 25-year-old attacker has officially left Dutch club De Graafschap with the Reds named as his likely next destination by de Gelderlander.

Thomassen had failed to score this season playing largely as a substitute for De Graafschap but did hit double figures in his past two seasons with Helmond Sport.

Adelaide have been crying out for a striker this season with marquee man Baba Diawara out injured.

Jamie Maclaren's Melbourne City move up in the air

2019-01-31T04:48:38Z

Socceroos striker Jamie Maclaren faces a nervous wait to find out whether he will be a Melbourne City player for the rest of the season.

According to reports, Maclaren has agreed to a deal but current club Hibernian must first allow the attacker to leave.

The Scottish side are currently without a manager and are trying to sign attacker Marc McNulty - two factors wreaking havoc with their final decision on Maclaren.

It's now all or nothing for City in their search for a new striker with the club failing in their attempts to sign Irish striker Wes Hoolahan.

Why Mariners' new signing will wear 68

2019-01-31T00:25:05Z

Jem Karacan is set to catch the eye this weekend as he inches towards an A-League debut and will turn more heads with his choice of squad numbers.

The former Premier League midfielder will wear 68 on his back this season for Central Coast Mariners and there's a touching reason behind it.

Born in Turkey, 68 is the postcode of Karacan's father's home town of Aksaray - making the choice of numbers a tribute of sorts.

Poised to play some part on Saturday against Melbourne Victory, the midfielder is eager to make his impact felt in the A-League.

“I’m an energetic box-to-box midfielder, I want to get on the ball and hopefully pop up with a couple of goals as well," Karacan said last week.

"I’ve played quite a lot of football over the years. I want to come out here and give everything I’ve got to help the club.

"Everyone who knows me, knows I will always give it my all and that’s something I’m looking to do here at the club."

'He will be killed' - Al-Araibi's wife makes emotional plea for detained husband

2019-01-30T23:45:51Z

The wife of Bahraini refugee Hakeem Al-Araibi has made an emotional plea for her husband to be released from detention in Thailand, saying he will be killed should he be extradited back to his homeland.

Al-Araibi, who has refugee status in Australia, has been held in South-East Asia for the past two months with Bahrain pushing for his extradition over alleged political crimes.

The former Bahraini international footballer was captured in Thailand while on holiday with his wife, who has now made an emotional plea for help.

Babbel tells Janjetovic he is on his last chance

2019-01-30T21:19:26Z

Western Sydney Wanderers goalkeeper Vedran Janjetovic has been told to 'stand up' by coach Markus Babbel after his howler cost the team two points against Brisbane Roar.

The shot-stopper inexplicably conceded a corner in the dying stages, allowing Adam Taggart the opportunity to head the equaliser.

Babbel's words suggested Janjetovic would be retained for Friday night's game against Newcastle Jets, but there was also a thinly veiled warning for the 31-year-old.

"I said to him, 'You can fall down but what I expect now is that you stand up'. He knows it wasn't the best decision but, even then, it wasn't a goal," Babbel said.

"We have the chance to clear the ball but someone else did a mistake as well. It cost us two points but it's a learning process.

"That's what I said, to learn to handle pressure. The pressure is on now, so it's also good to see from me how can you handle this pressure."

Phoenix snap up Golec

2019-01-30T00:19:32Z

Wellington Phoenix have completed the signing of defender Antony Golec after his release from Central Coast Mariners on Tuesday.

It will be the sixth A-League club Golec has played for after stints with Sydney FC, Adelaide United, Western Sydney Wanderers, Perth Glory and the Mariners.

The 28-year-old was a part of the Wanderers squad that lifted the Asian Champions League in 2014.

"Antony has been very successful in his career, not many can boast winning the Asian Champions League," Wellington coach Mark Rudan said.

"His experience winning trophies at club level will be fundamental in our plans for progression towards the finished product.

"As I’ve said before, competition within my squad is extremely important and recruiting players like Antony will push the playing squad to guarantee our performance is kept at an optimum level."
