Sadio Mane is confident that Liverpool’s performance last season will motivate them for success this term.

Jurgen Klopp’s men reached the final of the 2017-18 Champions League, losing 3-1 to Real Madrid with the Senegal international scoring the sole effort for the Reds.

The impressive performance also ensured that they finished the English top-flight in the top four, but failed to nick any trophy for their brilliant form.

They are currently second behind leaders Manchester City in the Premier League log and the forward who has scored seven goals this season has explained that they are buoyed to secure a diadem this term.

“It was a great season sadly we finally didn’t win something but this season it’s motivation for us to repeat it and try to go for it and win it,” Mane told BBC Sport.

“I score in the Champions League final very happy but after, the result is more important.”

The 26-year-old has been nominated for BBC Africa Footballer of the Year award along with teammate Mohamed Salah as well as Medhi Benatia, Kalidou Koulibaly and Thomas Partey.

“This is my fourth time to be nominated for the BBC African Footballer of the Year,” he added.

“It’s something that will give me more motivation to keep working harder and harder, and hopefully I will win it one day.”

Mane also reflected on his World Cup experience with Senegal in Russia where they failed to move beyond the group stage.

“I scored at the World Cup finals, one of my best days so far in football. We were leading 1-0 [against Japan] but it ended 2-2," he continued.

“It can be the best day of your life and sometimes it’s the worst day of your life, we were expecting to go far but we went out.”

After helping the Teranga Lions to victory over Equatorial Guinea in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Mane will be expected to play a key role when Liverpool take on Watford on Saturday.
