Technical director Francis Oti Akenteng believes weaker teams will now have a better chance of reaching the final tournament

Ghana Football Association technical director Francis Oti Akenteng believes the recent expansion of the Africa Cup of Nations participating teams bodes well for the competition.

Last week, Caf Executive Committee passed a resolution to increase the number of teams from the current 16 to 24.

This was one of two major changes to the flagship continental championship, the other being the rescheduling of the showpiece from its usual January/February date to June/July.

“We shall get more of the George Weah’s and Abedi Pele’s because some African countries are very small and if you don’t expand the tournament, it will make qualification very hard but they might have some talent in the team," Akenteng told Asempa FM.

“So let us take this opportunity and make the Afcon an attractive one so that competitive aspect will be improved.

"I think it is a positive step by Caf because football is becoming dynamic.

“There is a need to move forward because we’re competing with other confederations who are progressing, so I think it’s a good thing."

Caf says the new development will commence from the 2019 tournament to be hosted by Cameroon.
