Manchester United legend Gary Neville has challeneged Mohamed Salah ahead of next season following his brilliant, freakish debut campaign at Liverpool.

The Egypt international has been in a spectacular form since he arrived at the Anfield outfit last summer, scoring 43 goals in 48 appearances in all competitions.

The attacker has won the PFA and FWA Player of the Year awards following the feat and he is on course to scoop the English Premier League Golden boot prize having registered 31 efforts to lead the goalscorers’ chart.

However, the 43-year-old believes the former Chelsea flop needs to maintain his current level next term so as 'to be mentioned in the same light as' superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

"I want to understand whether this is an absolute freak,” Neville told Sky Sports .

"I watched him back at Basel and at Chelsea and his stats were getting better, but this season has been a jump from nowhere. Where has it come from?

"You normally see them growing and to me it's the most intriguing thing about next season.

"Is he a 20-goal a season man, which is still a really good player, or is he going to be mentioned in the same light as [Lionel] Messi and [Cristiano] Ronaldo?

"If he goes on to score 43 next season and 40 the year after then he gets into those Messi and Ronaldo numbers.”
