Kelvin Itoya has hailed the all-round impressive display of Enyimba following a 1-0 win over CARA Brazzaville in their final Caf Confederation Cup group stage encounter on Wednesday.
The People Elephants needed at least a draw to qualify for the quarterfinal of the competition but left it late to secure the vital victory through substitute Wasiu Alalade.
Following the win, the Enugu Rangers man feels proud, stressing that the Nigerian giants deserved to win owing to the unrelenting fight to earn the three points needed to reach the last eight.
“It was really a great result not just for Enyimba alone but Nigeria league as a whole,” Itoya told Goal.
“Enyimba is a big brand any day any time, you can't take it from them. Before their game against Djoliba in Mali, they haven't won an away game and I believe they know what's at stake and they just needed to win then come home to make it count to progress and they did.
“I had no doubt whatsoever about their chances of winning against CARA. I got strong believe that their away win will spur them to greater things in this year’s campaign. If you watched them, they really played well and dominated the game in the first half but could not manage to score.
“But they kept on pushing to score and were also solid defensively. I give credits to the players for securing such an important win, though the winning goal came late they were the best team of the day and truly well deserved to win.”
