Australian teenager Daniel Arzani made the wrong decision to join Scottish club Celtic on loan, according to former Socceroo Robbie Slater.

Arzani has moved to the Hoops on a two-year loan deal from Manchester City but is yet to be included in the senior team, restricted to two appearances for Celtic’s academy side instead.

While the 19-year-old still has time on his side, Slater boldly declared Arzani’s choice of clubs has already backfired.

“An obvious error to take him there,” Slater said on Fox Sports.

“After doing what he did at the World Cup he needed to go somewhere and play regularly. The mail is Brendan Rodgers won’t be starting him any time soon.

“Something’s gone wrong - very, very wrong there.”

Slater's comments come not long after a report from The World Game suggested Arzani might be allowed to return to Manchester in the next few months should he fail to be included in the first team.

Along with Celtic, a number of Dutch clubs were also believed to be interested in taking the Australian on loan but he ultimately decided to join the Hoops and link up with fellow Aussie Tom Rogic.

Another former Socceroo and ex-Rangers player Craig Moore defended Arzani’s move on Twitter stressing he hopes to see the teenager fight for his chance to impress.

Andy Harper meanwhile suggested any choice of clubs can only be vindicated by match minutes.

“No move is a good move unless the player ends up playing,” Harper said on Fox Sports

Arzani featured off the bench for the Socceroos in a 4-0 friendly win over Kuwait on Tuesday morning and will now return to Scotland looking to prove he made the right move.
