The Chilli Boys chairman has explained the confusion surrounding their recent announcement

Chippa United chairman Siviwe Mpengesi has clarified the confusion that resulted after their announcement of the signings of Thabo Matlaba and Bernard Morrison from Orlando Pirates last week.

The Chilli Boys recently announced that they had signed Matlaba, Morrison and Thamsanqa Sangweni from the Buccaneers.

However, Matlaba and Morrison, are reportedly not moving to Port Elizabeth to further their careers under coach Dan Malesela.

Just after the announcement was made by the Eastern Cape-based side, media reports emerged that suggested that Matlaba, was not keen on moving to Chippa.

Moreover, Goal also contacted Matlaba’s agent, Abbie Rasimphi who could not confirm the news of Matlaba’s move, saying the club instead would offer clarity on the issue.

Speaking to one of the SABC radio stations on Thursday, Mpengesi admitted that they are not signing Morrison and Matlaba, although he confirmed that Sangweni has rejoined Chippa.

“(Ayabulela) Konqobe and (Sizwe) Mdlinzo have left us, we decided they will not get game time with us because we have (Thabo) Nthethe and others who are experienced,” Mpengesi told Umhlobo Wenene FM.

“Sangweni is here, he has started training and he is in good shape, you will remember we never had his replacement in the middle of the park since he left us,” he said.

“The issue is there was something like (signing) that regarding Matlaba and Morrison.  The two players were signed as loans from Pirates, but what happened is that Pirates later released Morrison, they gave him his clearance,” explained Mpengesi.

“They gave him his papers so that he can negotiate with us, and the deal changed because we agreed Pirates will pay a portion of his salary and we also pay as well because it was a loan,” he revealed.

“We saw that if he joins us permanently, we cannot afford his salary and we could not agree,” he continued.

“I can assure you that Morrison is not coming to Chippa, that is the same with Matlaba – there were reports in the media that there was an issue with him,” he added.

“We have (Tebogo) Tlolane who comes from Jomo Cosmos and others at left back, the two (Matlaba and Morrison) players will not come to us,” concluded Mpengesi.
