'Buffon is still No.1' - Napoli's Meret hails Juventus goalkeeper after Coppa Italia heroics

Alex Meret says that Gianluigi Buffon proved that he is still the No.1 goalkeeper in the world with "three or four huge saves" in the Coppa Italia final on Wednesday night.

Even though Napoli won the game 4-2 on penalties, with Meret denying Paulo Dybala in the shootout at the Stadio Olimpico, he was full of praise for the 42-year-old Buffon.

"I am pleased with my performance but Gigi is still No.1," the 23-year-old told Rai Sport. “He proved that tonight with three or four huge saves.

"It’s an honour for me to play against someone who was, and is still, my idol, so that makes it all the more special.

"It’s so exciting for us to win the Coppa. I think we have had a great journey.

"We showed we know how to suffer but also that we can play good football.

"We gave everything from the first minute to the last, so I am truly so proud to be part of this team. The coach and president said they are proud of us too.

"We brought home the Coppa, which was one of our objectives at the start of the season.

"Now we have to maintain this fighting spirit and try to climb the table."

Napoli are currently sixth in Serie A and will resume their campaign against Verona on Tuesday, while table-toppers Juve will take on Bologna the night before.
