The Eagles striker, who is currently enjoying praise for his success against Ethiopia, explains why the situation is different at club level

Ghana striker Jordan Ayew claims that playing for country and club are not the same football, in response to those comparing his form at Crystal Palace with his output in the Black Stars.

The 27-year-old scored Ghana's two goals against Ethiopia in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on Sunday, but has struggled to hit the ground running after joining Palace on loan from Swansea City in August.

After eight games, Ayew is yet to find the back of the net for Roy Hodgson's side, prompting criticisms from fans at Selhurst Park. His blunder against Tottenham Hotspurs before the international break led to their 1-0 defeat at home.

“National team and club football is not the same,” Ayew told Joy FM.

“There is a difference between playing for your country and representing your club in local leagues. Ghana is a big country with wonderful players. Crystal Palace is a very good team but it is a team where I am new and it is not easy to adjust to a new team.

“The most important thing is that I keep working hard to adjust. I am going to work extra hard and the most important thing is that things will change, I am sure about that.

“I know that I will be rewarded. My career has not been easy but I always keep on working hard and have belief in my qualities so I don’t have any problems,” he added.

Palace will travel to Old Trafford on Saturday to battle Manchester United in the Premier League, with Ayew likely to start alongside Andros Townsend or Wilfred Zaha in attack.
