The Pride of Benue sit atop the league table with 40 points from 21 matches and could widen the gap even more with their immediate rivals: Kano Pillars (36 points), Plateau United (36 points) and Niger Tornadoes (34 points) all involved in away games against Abia Warriors, El Kanemi Warriors and Akwa United respectively.
Okpotu, who was the highest scorer in the top-flight last season charged his teammates to seize the opportunity to record another home win and ensure that they open up a further gap at the summit of the league log.
“This is the time for us to consolidate on our lead at the top and ensure we beat Yobe Desert Stars on Sunday even though we are aware it won’t be easy at all,” Okpotu told Goal.
“Yobe Stars may be a new team in the league but they have shown that they have what it takes to be in the premier league with the results they have recorded. They even beat us in Damaturu to confirm my suspicion of them.
“We are in a delicate position at the top and other clubs will be after us. We know that most of our direct opponents are playing away this weekend and this should motivate us to go on the hunt for the three points.“We can’t afford to slow down now with other clubs coveting our league position. I will say I am impressed with Yobe Stars under Mohammed Babaganaru because they have not shown that they are overwhelmed by playing in the premier league for the first time this season.”
