Brisbane Roar have come from behind to hold Central Coast Mariners to a 1-1 draw at Suncorp Stadium.
Under former Roar coach Mike Mulvey, the Mariners got off to the perfect start with Connor Pain finishing clinically on the break inside the fourth minute.
In an end-to-end contest, Brisbane probed for a swift equaliser with striker Adam Taggart putting a number of good chances wide.
Pain would then nearly double his tally in the 30th minute when he hit the post with a long-range effort that went tantalisingly across the face of goal.
Just before the break, the Roar really should have grabbed an equaliser with Tobias Mikkelsen teeing up Taggart, who somehow shot wide from a few metres out.
Brisbane continued to press in the second-half and Taggart would eventually find the back of the net on the hour mark only for VAR to deny him a goal via a very tight offside call.
Despite so much heartache in front of goal, the Roar striker kept his head up and would finally break through in the 65th minute after a tidy turn and clinical finish from close range.

Taggart and VAR would then tangle once again in the 75th minute after a Brisbane penalty was overturned due to an offside in build-up.
A breathless contest ending 1-1 in the end with the Roar lively and the Mariners determined to prove they won't be walkovers this season.
