AC Milan showed an interest in Kjaer last summer, agent admits

AC Milan were interested in signing Denmark captain Simon Kjaer last summer, agent Mikkel Beck confirmed, but stated the San Siro side have not made a concrete offer for the centre-back this year.

The Rossoneri have been linked with the 29-year-old as a potential replacement for Leonardo Bonucci, who confirmed on Thursday that he would like to return to Juventus after a just a year in the red and black.

Consequently, Milan have been linked with several potential replacements, including Kjaer, who gave numerous strong performances leading his national team at World Cup 2018, where they were only eliminated by eventual runners-up Croatia after a penalty shootout.

While Beck has admitted that the Serie A giants have been interested in his player in the past, there is no suggestion that a deal will be brokered this summer for a player also linked with a potential switch to the Premier League, as well as Marseille and Lyon after a previous successful stint in Ligue 1 at Lille.

“I have seen the rumours, but I have not spoken directly with AC Milan in the last few days,” Beck told Goal. “What I can say is that AC Milan were showing interest in Simon last summer at one point, but in the end he chose to go to Sevilla.

“I am not surprised by the rumours. When a player performs on such a high level at a World Cup, as Simon did as Denmark captain, then obviously there will be media speculation - and other big clubs will probably focus on him as well.

“Simon is happy to play for Sevilla in a great league like La Liga, and the club have big ambitions. Simon likes that, and he has just returned after the World Cup and started his pre-season, preparing to be ready to go all in to make it a great season.”

Sevilla’s La Liga campaign begins with a trip to Rayo Vallecano on August 19 after a Spanish Supercopa date against Barcelona on August 12.

They are already involved in European action, having defeated Ujpest 4-0 in a Europa League second qualifying round first leg clash earlier this week. The return leg in Hungary will be played on August 2.
