Commentary

That’s all from us tonight. Thank you for joining us and until next time, goodbye.
Beram Kayal gave Israel the lead with a sublime strike from distance before a quick-fire James Forrest double sent Scotland into the break with a 2-1 lead. Forrest completed his hat-trick in the second half with a calm finish in keeping with his all-round performance before Eran Zahavi pulled a goal back for the visitors with 15 minutes remaining. Scotland dug deep and held on though and over the course of the game probably deserved the victory.
It wasn’t comfortable and it certainly wasn't easy but Scotland have done it. A fantastic game that showcased exactly how much was at stake for both teams tonight. Scotland finish the group in top spot and earn themselves a place in one of the Euro 2020 play-off matches while Israel miss out on the opportunity to gain promotion.
90' + 4' FULL-TIME: SCOTLAND 3-2 ISRAEL.
90' + 3' The free kick is floated in and defended well by Scotland. The ball is picked back up by the men in white but as another ball is floated on top of Scotland, Tomer Hemed is flagged offside and a collective sigh of relief is audible around Hampden Park.
90' + 3' Scotland are desperately trying to keep hold of the ball but they give away a free kick in their own half.
90' + 1' An effort comes in from Omri Ben Harush from outside the box and the ball almost fall for an Israel player but McGregor puts the ball behind for a corner.
M. Phillips
Yellow Card
89' Yellow card for Matt Phillips as Scotland try and slow this game down.
88' HUGE CHANCE FOR ISRAEL! A long pass in behind finds the sub Hemed who is one on one with McGregor. Hemed flicks a leg at the ball but the Scotland keeper is equal to the point blank range effort and the rebound is scuffed wide. Big let off for Scotland. Big save McGregor.
S. McTominay
S. Fletcher
87' It was initially meant to be Forrest coming off but it is Steven Flecther who is replaced by Manchester United’s Scott McTominay.
O. Ben Harush
Yellow Card
86' Omri Ben Harush knows he is going to be beaten for pace by Shinnie so pulls him down and takes a yellow card.
T. Hemed
T. Tawatha
85' That cross was Tawatha's last contribution of the game as he is replaced by QPR's Tomer Hemed.
83' Tawatha has been surprisingly quiet for the majority of this game but he picks the ball up down the left, drives towards the by-line and delivers a wicked, whipped ball that is parried behind for a corner.
81' Cohen switches play out to the right for Israel as they look to open up Scotland but the pass is miscontrolled and runs out for a throw-in.
79' Israel probe and probe now as Scotland sink deeper into their own half.
78' Ryan Fraser takes a ball on the run as Scotland try and break on Israel. He surges forward and as he reaches the left side of the box he lets fly with his left foot but he cannot keep his effort down.
G. Shinnie
R. Christie
76' Ryan Christie has had a good game for the most part tonight but he is now taken off in favour of Graeme Shinnie who has possibly the most wonderfully Sunday League name in football.
M. Phillips
S. Armstrong
76' Stuart Armstrong is replaced by West Brom's Matt Phillips.
B. Natcho
Assist
75' Bibras Natcho picks the ball up from his defender on the edge of the centre circle and plays a cutting pass throught the Scotland midfield to the feet of Zahavi.
E. Zahavi
Goal
75' ISRAEL SCORE! Almost a carbon copy of the Israel’s opener as Zahavi picks the ball up outside the box and is given acres of space. He takes his time and, like Kayal in the first-half, picks his spot and unleases a lovely strike into the far left corner of the Scotland goal. 3-2 to Scotland.
D. Sabi'A
D. Peretz
73' Dor Peretz is replaced by Dia Saba. Peretz is recently booked and was struggling to keep his emotions under wraps.
72' Forrest produces yet again as he jinks down the left and delivers and wonderful cross towards the far post. Fletcher gets his head to it but tries to tee up a teammate rather than go for goal and no one is waiting for the cut back.
D. Peretz
Yellow Card
70' Dor Peretz receives a yellow card for Israel as frustrations begin to show.
69' Confidence is flowing for Forrest as he receives a pass just to the right on the edge of the box. He shifts the ball onto his left foot and, judging by his performance so far, releases a shot that should be top corner bound. Unfortunately, it flies over the crossbar.
A. Cohen
L. Taha
67' The cautioned Loai Taha is replaced by Almog Cohen.
R. Fraser
Assist
64' Ryan Fraser shows great awareness to pick out his compatriot inside the box. A word on Andrew Robertson though who has had a significant hand in the build up to all three Scotland goals.
J. Forrest
Goal
64' HAT-TRICK! JAMES FORREST! What a game he is having. Fraser latches onto a round the corner ball from Robertson and darts into the box. He gets his head up and picks out the late arriving James Forrest how again shows remarkable composure under pressure to calmly slot the ball into the bottom of the net. Scotland lead 3-1 and are heading for a Euro 2020 play-off.
62' Dabbur picks the ball up on the edge of the Scotland box and tries a little scoop ball over the top. Robertson intervenes however and the ball rolls out for an Israel corner.
60' Scotland’s Ryan Fraser has been directly involved in 13 goals in 16 appearances for club and country combined in 2018-19 (five goals and eight assists). He has looked lively today but the star man so far has no doubt been James Forrest.
58' We have a little bite from Kayal there after he is fouled by Paterson. The Israeli midfielder reacts with a shoulder on the Scotland player but it’s all handbags at dawn and nothing comes of it.
56' Fraser delivers a whipped free kick from the right which has the goalkeeper scrambling but Harush just manages to get a glove on it and tip it away from danger.
54' McGergor unleashes a long range effort but doesn’t catch it quite right and sends the ball ballooning into the stands.
L. Taha
Yellow Card
52' Taha is cautioned. Scotland has men over and a cynical foul on Fletcher is enough to earn the Israeli a booking.
50' Steven Fletcher loops a header but his attempt is just off target.
49' Zahavi breaks forward for Israel and has a speculative effort but it is blocked and makes its way out for a corner. Nothing comes from the corner however but Israel retain the ball.
47' Another long ball in behind the Israel defence is played by Paterson to Fletcher but the striker is caught offside. Those type of balls are clearly part of Scotland’s game plan.
47' Scotland’s only previous home game against Israel came in April 1981 in a World Cup qualifier, Scotland winning 3-1 thanks to a John Robertson brace and a David Provan strike. Alex McLeish would certainly take a repeat of that scoreline tonight.
47' Half chance for Scotland. Forrest again shows good feet outside of the box before laying the ball into the path of the on running Fraser down the left. Fraser crosses the ball low hoping for a near post run but Harush safely collects it in his hands.
46' We are back under way and Hampden Park with Israel on the ball.
Israel struggled to get out of their half for long periods during the first 45 and it did feel as though they were quite content to defend their one goal lead. They cannot afford to sit back in this half though as they need a goal to secure top spot in the group and a Euro 2020 play-off place. It will be interesting to see if Scotland continue to hassle Israel and play on the front foot of if they will regress into a more defensive system and try and see out their one goal lead. Lots more action to come in the second half hopefully.
Scotland were a little slow out of the traps in the first ten minutes but they really stepped it up after going behind to a wonderful Kayal strike. McLeish’s men reacted impressively and Forrest dragged them back into the game with his composure and quality after finishing off a deflected Armstrong effort to equalise. The Celtic man then finished off a very Scottish feeling move to send Scotland in 2-1 at the break.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: SCOTLAND 2-1 ISRAEL.
45' We are just about to go into added time at the end of the first half and Scotland are still on top. Israel cannot get out.
R. Christie
Assist
43' Ryan Christie shows wonderful vision to pick out his teammate from the left of the box with a cushioned left footed pass. Very nice.
J. Forrest
Goal
43' SCOTLAND LEAD! They have turned it around and it’s Forrest again! A long ball from Robertson is flicked into the path of Christie by Fletcher. Christie charges towards the box, sees Forrest free on his right and loops a delightful pass into the path of the Celtic man. Forrest slides the ball right-footed under Harush and makes it 2-1 Scotland.
C. McGregor
Yellow Card
40' Booking for McGregor as he fouls Dabbur. The challenge wasn’t particularly cynical but he did catch the Salzburg man a little late and Dabbur stays on the ground.
38' Israel are struggling to get out of their own half here as McLeish’s men keep the pressure up as they smell blood.
36' Scotland have turned the tables on Israel here and no one deserved that goal more than Forrest. He has been Scotland’s most lively player throughout. Scotland push forward again in search of another.
J. Forrest
Goal
34' EQUALISER!!! SCOTLAND ARE LEVEL! Christie receives the ball on the edge of the box, works it out to Robertson who plays in back towards Armstrong who hits one just inside the box. The ball deflects back out to James Forrest who has the wherewithal to take a touch and compose himself before lashing the ball into the back of the net from inside the penalty area to make it 1-1.
R. Fraser
Assist
34' Armstrong takes a shot on and the ball strikes Ryan Fraser in the back and falls at the feet of Forrest to finish. Slightly fortunate assist.
31' Great skill from Forrest as Christie lays the ball off to him and he darts past two challenges before Israel scramble the ball behind for a corner. Scotland are knocking at the door now.
29' Fraser takes the corner and places it on the head of a diving Paterson who sees his header miss to the right.
27' Scotland work the throw to Christie who weaves his way into the box. The Scotland number 10 tries an effort but it deflects safely into the goalkeepers grasp.
26' Forrest gets in again in a similar position but this time overhits his cross. Scotland have a throw on the right.
24' Forrest gets on the ball down the Scotland right and runs at two Israel defenders. The winger manages to get a cross in but it is cleared by the men in white.
22' CHANCE SCOTLAND! Fraser scrambles into the box and finds a cut back which is cleared by Israel but only as far as McGregor who connects perfectly with his left foot from 25 yards to send the ball flying towards the Israel goal. A good save from Harush keeps Israel’s lead intact.
20' The corner is poor and barely reaches the first man. Disappointing for Israel.
19' Again Israel look dangerous down the left. This time an early cross is delivered and Robertson diligently cushions it behind for a corner at the back post.
18' Scotland have won three of their four previous meetings with Israel in all competitions, though they did lose against them in their most recent meeting in October (1-2 in the Nations League). They are behind already here and need something to change to grab that play-off place.
17' Scotland are beginning to see a little more of the ball and are desperately trying to get Andy Robertson into the game as often as possible. There is not much on for him this time though and his forward pass is easily intercepted.
15' Paterson tries to find Fletcher in an advanced position but the Scotland striker is too advanced and is flagged offside.
13' Ryan Fraser gets on the end of another ball in behind and is fouled on the right. He stays down for a few seconds but thankfully for Alex McLeish he is now back on his feet.
11' Scotland try to drag themselves back into this game but give the ball away to Tawatha who drives at the dark blue defence. The wide man lays the ball to Dabbur who dribbles inside the box but cannot keep his effort on target
E. Zahavi
Assist
9' Zahavi is unchallenged on the Scotland left and casually lays the ball into that path of Kayal who has all the time in the world to size up his effort.
B. Kayal
Goal
9' WHAT A GOAL!!! Beram Kayal is given acres of space 25 yards from goal and the ex-Celtic man accepts the invitation to shoot and rockets his effort into the back of the Scotland net. 1-0 Israel thanks to a wonderful strike.
7' Robertson plays a ball in behind the Israeli back line for Ryan Fraser but the Bournemouth player can’t beat the first man with his cross. Encouraging move for the Scots nonetheless.
6' That was a dubious looking throw-in from Dasa. A foul throw at International level?
4' Already Israel look the more comfortable on the ball with some nice touches from Tawatha and Kayal. The away side try and work an opening down the right but Dabbur is caught offside.
2' Tawatha has made an electric start to the game twice getting at stand in right back Paterson. This could be a long night for the Cardiff man if this continues.
1' It is an energetic start from Scotland as Ryan Christie unleashes a speculative effort in the first 30 seconds. Nothing comes of it though.
1' After that hair raising rendition of Flower of Scotland, the referee blows his whistle and we are under way at Hampden Park.
Scotland have lost just one of their last 12 competitive home games (W8 D3), remaining unbeaten in each of their last seven (W4 D3). Only a victory will do tonight however.
The players are out on the pitch and the national anthems are being played. We are almost ready for kick off!
Tonight is a real chance for both of these teams to get one foot in the Euro 2020 door. Despite some of the negativity surrounding this competition there will be no doubt about the competitiveness of tonight’s match.
Ex-Celtic midfielder Beram Kayal starts in the centre of the park for Israel alongside captain and playmaker Bibras Natcho. In the first meeting between these two Scotland were given a tough time by Taleb Tawatha down the left so he is definitely one to watch against an out of position Callum Paterson.
After having no less than nine player withdraw from his squad, Alex McLeish stumbled across a winning formula against Albania last Saturday. He unsurprisingly names an unchanged XI for tonight’s clash with Israel. The creativity for Scotland will no doubt come from the left with skipper Andrew Robertson playing just behind the exciting Ryan Fraser. Callum Paterson again plays on the right side of defence despite being a more attacking player for his club Cardiff.
SUBS: Ben Sahar, Diaa Saba, Ayad Habashi, Dor Micha, Manor Soloman, Dan Glazer, Guy Haimov, Shir Tzedek, Daniel Amos, Ben Bitton, Almog Cohen, Tomer Hemed.
ISRAEL (3-5-2): Ariel Harush; Sheran Yeini, Loai Taha, Omri Ben Harush; Eli Dasa, Dor Peretz, Bibras Natcho, Beram Kayal, Taleb Tawatha; Eran Zahavi, Munas Dabbur
SUBS: Jamie MacDonald, Jack Hendry, Johnny Russell, Graeme Shinnie, Oliver McBurnie, John Fleck, Scott McTominay, Gary Mackay-Steven, Scott Bain, Matt Phillips.
SCOTLAND (4-1-4-1): Allan McGregor; Callum Paterson, David Bates, Scott McKenna, Andrew Robertson; Callum McGregor; James Forrest, Stuart Armstrong, Ryan Christie, Ryan Fraser; Steven Fletcher.
A victory tonight for Scotland will see them top the group and secure them a Euro 2020 play-off place, while Israel just need a draw for the same reward.
Good evening and welcome to our coverage of this UEFA Nations League clash between Scotland and Israel.
