Commentary

That's all for today, goodbye!
Luxembourg stay in third, just one point behind Serbia and Portugal, who played out a draw in the other group match today, having played a game less. It's a tough test for them next time out though as they welcome Portugal. Ireland have lost their opening two qualifiers, dropping to the bottom of the table. Next up for them is a friendly against Qatar on Tuesday.
Rodrigues' late goal seals a 1-0 win for Luxembourg over Ireland. It was a tight game, with Collins having the best chances for Ireland. He saw a close-range effort smothered by Moris in the first half before he sent an overhead kick into the side netting in the second. Rodrigues won the game for Luxembourg in the 85th minutes when he drilled his shot into the bottom corner from outside the box, to earn his side the three points.
90' + 5' FULL-TIME: REPUBLIC OF IRELAND 0-1 LUXEMBOURG.
90' + 4' O'Shea plays a good throughball down the right for Long and he gets lucky as it bounces away from Jans and he cuts into the box. He drills a low shot towards the near post, but Moris gets down quickly to hold onto it.
L. Gerson
D. Sinani
90' + 2' Luxembourg's second substitution is a defensive one as they bring on Gerson for Sinani.
90' That was Rodrigues' first international goal since September 2020 against Azerbaijan.
J. Molumby
J. Cullen
88' Cullen is also taken off, with Molumby on in his place.
T. Parrott
J. Collins
88' Double change for Ireland now as they try to find a late equaliser. Collins is the first to make way, with Parrott replacing him.
87' Ireland win their first corner of the second half and Brady swings a dangerous cross onto the goal line. Moris pushes it away from Collins who is running in before winning a foul when the forward crashes into him.
G. Rodrigues
Goal
85' RODRIGUES SCORES! Ireland have a chance to clear their lines when Moris goes long with the free-kick, but Cullen can't get enough on it and it's intercepted by Rodrigues. He takes a touch before drilling his shot on goal and he fires it past Bazunu and into the far bottom corner. 1-0 Luxembourg!
84' Long has made a good run into the left of the box and Coleman switches play out to him with a long pass over the top. He brings it down, using his arm to control the ball, and gives a free-kick to Luxembourg.
82' Ireland win the ball back deep in their own half and Collins picks out Brady in the middle. He tries to play a first-time pass through to Long, but there's too much on it and it's another wasted chance for Ireland to break forward.
J. Cullen
Yellow Card
80' Cullen pulls back Thill to get on the ball and is booked for the foul.
M. Deville
V. Thill
79' First change for Luxembourg now and it's Vincent Thill that's being taken off, with Deville replacing him.
78' Jans is struggling to keep up with Brady on the right and the substitute steps away from him to curl a cross into the box. Collins misses it in the middle and Long throws himself forward at the far post but can't get a touch on it.
76' Jans was closed down by Knight and caught the midfielder when he tried to play the ball and gave away a free-kick. He's stayed down and looks to be in a lot of pain with his knee and he's helped off the field by the medical team, although it looks like he wants to come back on.
75' Brady has switched out to the left for the time being and Marvin Martins sits back and gives him the space to curl another great cross into the middle of the box. Long pulls away from Chanot to get on the end of it but glances his header wide of the far post.
S. Long
C. Robinson
73' Another change for Ireland now and it's Robinson that's making way, with Long replacing him.
72' Ireland are closing Luxembourg down much higher up the field now and making it difficult for the visitors to get out of their own half. Jans tries to set Rodrigues off down the left, but he puts his pass straight out of play.
70' CLOSE! It's better from Ireland now with Brady finding some space down the right and he puts a good cross into the near post. Collins goes for the spectacular with the overhead kick and he's not far away as it hits the side netting.
69' Christopher Martins can't find any space down the right so he switches play out to Jans on the opposite side. He manages to pull away from Coleman and drills a cross into the middle, but it's too short for Rodrigues and O'Shea clears it.
67' GOOD CHANCE! Knight plays in Robinson on the right of the box with a throughball and he goes for goal despite the tight angle. He's trying to lift the shot over the keeper, but it's always rising and it sails just over the bar.
65' Ireland can't get a touch on the ball at the moment as Luxembourg continue to keep possession and they're pushing forward down the right with Marvin Martins swinging a cross into the box. He's looking for Vincent Thill in the middle, but it's a good interception by Coleman.
63' Again, Ireland just can't get their lines clear and Mahmutovic floats a good cross into the box for Olivier Thill, but his header is straight down the middle at Bazunu. The flag goes up against him though, so it wouldn't have counted anyway.
62' GOOD SAVE! Ireland don't clear their lines and it bounces kindly for Vincent Thill on the edge of the six-yard box. He pokes his effort towards goal and Bazunu gets down well to make the save with his foot.
J. McClean
C. Clark
61' Second change for Ireland now and it's Clark that's making way for McClean.
60' Browne has stayed out on the right as he tries to get Ireland up the field, but none of his team-mates are making runs into the box ahead of him so he's forced to go backwards and the hosts start again.
L. Jans
Yellow Card
58' Jans stepped across Browne to stop the run and earns himself a yellow card.
57' Ireland are keeping the ball well at the moment and are forcing Luxembourg to sit back deep in their own half. Browne is trying to make something happen down the right and plays a one-two with Knight before being stopped by Jans.
55' GOOD CHANCE! Stevens wins a free-kick in a good position on the left for Ireland and Brady swings a good cross into the middle. Browne dives forward to get his head on it, sending it back across goal and just wide of the far post.
D. Sinani
Yellow Card
53' Sinani is also booked for his part in the coming together.
E. Stevens
Yellow Card
53' Stevens goes across to try and win the ball back off Sinani and holds him off to give away a foul. There's a coming together between the two after the referee's whistle and Stevens is booked.
51' Brady swings a free-kick deep into the box from the right and Browne rises above Chanot to head it back across the box. O'Shea moved into space to get into space and it's just out of his reach which gives Jans the chance to clear his lines.
49' Luxembourg win a free-kick to the left and Olivier Thill decides to go for goal despite being a long way out. He curls his effort towards the near post, and Bazunu is tracking back quickly, but his shot flies just wide of the target.
47' Ireland have made a bright start to the second half with Brady making a driving run down the left but his cross was played behind Collins. The hosts win it back though and Robinson is picked out on the edge of the box, but he fires his effort high over the bar.
46' Luxembourg get us back underway for the second half!
R. Brady
M. Doherty
46' There's a change at the break for Ireland with Doherty, who had a hamstring problem in the first half, making way and Brady coming on for him.
Ireland had some good spells of possession in the first half, but too often when they got into Luxembourg's half, they gave the ball away cheaply and Kenny will want to see that change after the break. As for Luxembourg, they've looked dangerous when breaking forward, but Holtz will expect more from his team in the final third in the second half.
It's goalless at the break between Ireland and Luxembourg. There haven't been too many clear cuts chances for either side, but Collins came closest for the hosts 18 minutes in when he latched onto Robinson's cross but his close-range shot was smothered by Moris. At the other end, Rodrigues tried to catch out Bazunu with a long-range chip, but the goalkeeper backtracked quickly to push it away on the line.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: REPUBLIC OF IRELAND 0-0 LUXEMBOURG.
45' + 1' Doherty touches the ball back to Coleman and he swings a dangerous cross into the six-yard box for Collins to run onto. Moris is under it for Luxembourg and he wins a foul when he's caught in the face by the forward.
44' Stevens is brought down by Christopher Martins but the referee plays a good advantage as Collins breaks down the left for Ireland. He has Cullen to his right and tries to square it to him but it's blocked by Barreiro and Ireland waste the chance to counter-attack.
42' SAVE! Rodrigues turns away from Knight and spots Bazunu off his line so chips an effort on goal from a long way out. The keeper rushes back to his line and the shot is dipping under the bar, but he pushes it away and quickly picks himself up to stop Olivier Thill from reaching the loose ball.
40' It looks like there's too much on the pass over the top from Cullen when he tries to pick out Browne, but the defender stopped which gave him chance to bring it down. Moris is quick off his line and just does enough to stop him from getting a shot away.
38' Luxembourg break quickly through the middle with Vincent Thill and Rodrigues drops back to receive the pass from him. It's squared to him and he takes a touch before drilling a shot on goal, but Clark slides in to block the effort.
36' Luxembourg have everyone sitting deep as Ireland push forward, but the hosts do well to open up a pocket of space for Browne on the left to curl a cross into the middle. He's looking for Robinson, but Jans is there to head it clear for Luxembourg.
34' Browne is caught by Chanot on the edge of the box but the advantage is played as Robinson pulls away from the defender with the ball to get into space for a shot. He drills it into the middle, but it's blocked by Mahmutovic.
32' Cullen finds himself in a pocket of space and he tries to lift the ball over the top for Collins, who's just peeled away from Chanot through the middle. The pass curls away from him though and Moris comes off his line to collect it.
30' It's a poor clearance from Marvin Martins deep on the right and it's picked off by Knight, who instantly plays in Robinson on the left. He sets himself for the cross, but Vincent Thill gets back quickly and nicks it off him.
28' It's patient play from Ireland as they play out from the back and try to open up the space in behind Luxembourg. Doherty spots Robinson in space down the left and switches it out to him but he can't find a way past Christopher Martins.
26' Ireland are sitting back deep in their own box and making it difficult for Luxembourg to get in behind them and Barreiro is forced to go all the way back to Moris as the visitors look to try and play out from the back and draw Ireland out.
24' Ireland give it away again, with Robinson's pass intercepted by Vincent Thill. He turns and plays a throughball into Sinani, but he can't get away from Clark to find space for a shot.
22' The ball is played over the top by Chanot and Rodrigues brings it down on the edge of the box. He's quickly closed down by two Ireland defenders so touches it out to Marvin Martins, but his cross is blocked by Stevens.
20' Doherty's run is blocked off down the right and he wins a free-kick in a dangerous position for Ireland. Browne fizzes his cross into the near post and Mahmutovic manages to get a glancing touch on it to take it away from Clark.
18' GREAT SAVE! Stevens is in a pocket of space and he picks out Robinson's run down the left. He has Marvin Martins with him but he gets ahead of him to drill a low cross into the box. Collins gets on the end of it but his close-range shot is smothered by Moris.
17' Vincent Thill wins a free-kick on the right and is standing over it for Luxembourg. He floats a brilliant cross into the box which the goalkeeper doesn't come for. Sinani is running onto it, but Clark gets there first to head it out for a corner.
15' Luxembourg have won just three of their 124 away matches in Euros/World Cup qualifiers (D10 L111) and are winless in their last 28 qualifying matches on the road (D6 L22) since a 2-1 win over Switzerland in September 2008.
O. Thill
Yellow Card
13' Vincent Thill plays a short pass into midfield and Knight reacts quickest to intercept it. Olivier Thill slides in to try and win it back but earns himself a booking for the last challenge.
11' Doherty has gone down for Ireland and it looks like he's struggling with a hamstring problem. The medical team are on giving him some treatment, and it looks like he's going to try and carry on.
10' Ireland work it out wide and it's a great cross into the middle from Doherty which picks out Browne in the middle. He gets his head onto it, but he can't flick it on towards goal and ends up fouling Marvin Martins in the process.
8' Stevens plays a one-two with Robinson to try and get away from Marvin Martins on the left, and he just manages to keep the ball in play after a heavy touch from Robinson. He goes to swing a cross in, but the right-back is there to make a block.
6' Mahmutovic almost plays himself into trouble when he touches the ball back to Moris, but it's short and Robinson is closing the keeper down. Moris reacts quickly though and rushes off his line to sweep it clear.
4' Again, Ireland are caught out in midfield, this time with Rodrigues dispossessing Browne and he drives forward through the middle before squaring it to Vincent Thill. He's closed down by Cullen so he takes a shot early but drags it wide of the near post.
2' Sinani is quickly onto Cullen to win the ball back in midfield and it's knocked out to Vincent Thill on the right. He plays a one-two with Olivier Thill to get into space on the edge of the box before curling a shot on goal, but it's straight down the middle at Bazunu.
1' Robinson gets the game underway for Ireland!
The teams are out on the pitch, with kick-off just moments away.
Ireland haven't begun a World Cup qualifying campaign with two consecutive defeats since qualification for the 1970 tournament, losing against Czechoslovakia and Denmark back then.
Luc Holtz makes six changes to his team after their loss to Qatar last time out, with Marvin Martins, Mahmutovic, Olivier Thill, Rodrigues, Barreiro and Vincent Thill all coming in. Pinto, Gerson, Sebastien Thill, Deville, Bohnert and Muratovic start on the bench.
Stephen Kenny makes three changes to the side that lost to Serbia on Wednesday, bringing in teenage goalkeeper Bazunu as well as Knight and Collins. Travers and Molumby drop to the bench, while Aaron Connolly is ruled out through injury.
