Commentary

Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
Villarreal have a few days to recover from their exploits before they take on Manchester United in the Europa League final on Wednesday. Real Madrid have now ended their hectic campaign and will have a busy summer retooling their squad.
Real Madrid record a 2-1 comeback win over Villarreal, but their LaLiga title bid falls short as Atletico Madrid beat Real Valladolid to claim the crown. Los Blancos were up against it this afternoon, needing their rivals to slip up. Villarreal stunned Zinedine Zidane's men by taking the lead through Yeremi Pino. It took the home side until the 87th minute to respond through Karim Benzema with a stunning effort. The Frenchman then turned provider for Luka Modric to snatch the three points in stoppage time with a fine goal on the half-volley. However, Madrid miss out on the title by two points and end the campaign without silverware. Villarreal failed to qualify for the Europa League through LaLiga, although they turn their attention to the Europa League final next week to attempt to earn a Champions League place.

57' DISALLOWED GOAL!!! MADRID SEE THEIR EFFORT CHALKED OFF! Benzema believes that he has levelled for Los Blancos with a precise header from Casemiro's cross. Villarreal have been the better side and as it stands they will qualify for the Europa League. A massive 45 minutes awaits.
Real Madrid's hopes of beating out Atletico Madrid for the LaLiga crown are fading after 45 minutes as they trail Villarreal 1-0 at the break. Yeremi Pino was on the spot in the box to fire the visitors ahead after latching onto a throughball from Gerard Moreno. 1' We're under way in this LaLiga clash.
Real Madrid could win their 35th LaLiga title. It would be the first time they have won the league in consecutive seasons since 2006/07 under Fabio Capello and 2007/08 under Bernd Schuster. In fact, Zinédine Zidane could become the first Real Madrid manager to win two league titles in a row since Leo Beenhakker's three (1986/87, 1987/88 and 1988/89).
Villarreal have made four changes to their side from their win over Sevilla in their last outing. Rulli gets the nod to start between the posts ahead of Asenjo. Gaspar and Pedraza come into the back four, while Capoue gets the start in the middle of the park.
Zidane has made one change to his side from their win over Bilbao last time out. Asensio comes into the fold on the right flank in the final third to replace Rodrygo, who drops to the bench. Valverde, Casemiro and Modric start in the middle of the park, while Toni Kroos is absent. Militao and Varane anchor the defence, although Ramos is available off the bench.
VILLARREAL SUBS: Sergio Asenjo, Ramiro Funes Mori, Dani Raba, Pervis Estupinan, Paco Alcacer, Alberto Moreno, Francis Coquelin, Ruben Pena, Jaume Costa, Moi Gomez, Alex Baena, Fernando Nino.
VILLARREAL (4-4-2): Geronimo Rulli; Mario Gaspar, Raul Albiol, Pau Torres, Alfonso Pedraza; Yeremi Pino, Etienne Capoue, Daniel Parejo, Manu Trigueros; Gerard Moreno, Carlos Bacca.
REAL MADRID SUBS: Sergio Ramos, Nacho Fernandez, Marcelo, Andriy Lunin, Isco, Mariano Diaz, Rodrygo Silva, Diego Altube, Antonio Blanco.
REAL MADRID (4-3-3): Thibaut Courtois; Alvaro Odriozola, Eder Militao, Raphael Varane, Miguel Gutierrez; Federico Valverde, Casemiro, Luka Modric; Marco Asensio, Karim Benzema, Vinicius Junior.
Villarreal will aim to play the role of the spoiler this afternoon for Madrid, although they still have to win to ensure that they qualify for the Europa League next term. Unai Emery's men sit in seventh place and need to better either Real Sociedad or Real Betis' result today. However, the club will also have one eye on their Europa League final against Manchester United next week where they can secure a Champions League berth. They too have won back-to-back matches, beating Real Valladolid and Sevilla, giving them momentum to take into the contest.
Real Madrid have a simple formula this afternoon, they must win at all costs. Anything other than a victory will see the title handed to their rivals Atletico Madrid and even that might not be enough. If Atletico earn a point from their contest and Madrid earn a win, the title will be theirs on the basis of their head-to-record against their rivals. If Diego Simeone's men win their match against Real Valladolid it's all over anyway for Los Blancos. Zinedine Zidane may have one final ace up his sleeve in potentially his final game, and his side are in good form having beaten Athletic Bilbao and Granada in their last two matches, but the odds are against them.
Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the LaLiga clash between Real Madrid and Villarreal at the Alfredo Di Stefano.
